A map of by what general year a region was conquered by a central, bureaucratic government. I'm not counting barbarian empires like the Huns and Mongols. As you can see, most of the world was tribal until very recently.

I showed this map to a friend of mine and the first thing they asked was about Cahokia and the Mississippi civilization. Is there a reason for not including them?

That's really interesting. I guess they deserve to be. I was thinking bureaucratic as in written records, but on the other hand that disqualifies the early Andean civilizations and Great Zimbabwe. I good case could be made for your argument.

On another point, archaeology points towards Mississippians fighting a losing war against the hunter gatherer peoples in the Great Plains around 1300, with the Mississippian cities being burned to the ground. I wish we knew more about this war, but sadly, that's the issue of prehistory.

I generally agree with the color coding, but I disagree with a lot of the specific dates.
