During lockdown some people dreamed of writing a novel, or developing a 6-pack, or retraining for a new profession.

Gav and I recorded a 32-episode-long companion podcast to the classic BBC TV show Jonathan Creek. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s all about a magician’s assistant who solves impossible crimes using his unusual but wonderful mind. It features one of TV’s great romances. He also lives in a windmill. What more could you ask for?

It’s long been a shared passion, a show we loved deeply as kids and have rewatched continually over the years. We often joked while at IGN that one day we’d rank all 32 episodes and put it on the site. We never got around to it, but then lockdown happened, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity.

So what you’re going to listen to over the coming weeks is a podcast recorded almost entirely in isolation. We started recording on April 6th, and it became part of our daily lockdown routine. We’d watch the episode the night before, then meet up the following morning on Zoom with a brew to record.

Each episode breaks down an episode into three parts or acts: The Effect, The Method, and The Reveal. There’s also a fair amount of grot, things that really shouldn’t be said anymore, and lots of flirting which we tackle in The Elements, the second half of every episode.

Is this part of the Patreon?

Not strictly. We wanted to tell you about it, because obviously we know you already like the things we make, and obviously your patron support allows us to be experimental and make things like this. So while it might not be folded into the tiers formally, like everything we make, it literally wouldn’t exist without you.

We also realise this is something a little bit different, and very much a passion project for the both of us. This is something extra we just wanted to make and finally had the time.

That said, we still wanted to publish it under the RKG banner as that’s our channel and the home of the things we make together.

When’s it out?

This Sunday, November 15th we have the first 5 episodes going live, which covers the entire first season of Jonathan Creek. From then on, we’ll be releasing one episode every Sunday until we’ve watched all 32 episodes.

Where can I listen?

Currently it’s available on the below platforms and most podcast apps, if you’d like to subscribe and join us on our epic journey through mystery, 90s nostalgia, and old-fashioned muck.

Up The Creek even has its own little website here to keep track of all the episodes.

This is brilliant! Who did the artwork? It's banging!

rkg

Absolutely not. We'll be going through every episode in the order they originally broadcast on the BBC.

This is fucking great chaps, that artwork as well 😍

The Zerbs

Great idea boys. Is this show on any streaming services? I live in the US and have never heard of it before

I found it on my Apple TV through a subscription service called Britbox, it’s giving me a 7 day free trial so gonna try to watch it via that. You prolly don’t have to go through Apple TV but that’s how I came to find it.

I’ve just smashed through series one (show and podcast), not sure how I’m going to slow down to one episode a week!

is there going to be an episode where we can write in with questions?

Has anyone told Gav that those in glass grot cabinets shouldn’t throw stones?

Just started my own little watch-a-long project with this podcast and it’s seriously one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done in lockdown. So much fun picking out my own Most British Things and entries for Grot Cabinet in each episode 😂 Excellent work guys, if you plan on making your way through all of the best British TV detectives then I’m voting for Poirot.
