From personal experience, a seance can be tainted by the one channeling. I've been to more than one where the medium's biases were all too clear in who/what she channeled and what her emotional state was.

It's definitely best to be in a group where all party members want the same thing or at least have the same mind set for these things. You never know when someone comes with their own agenda.
