Before boldly walking up to the gate, maybe check the lake first? Other changelings have to have a way past the border, and a water access point would be discrete.

I'd say check the lake as well. Looks like a tunnel under there you can use. Worst case scenario, if you get caught by the guards, you can tell them that you were on a clandestine diplomatic mission and are returning home after having met with Princess Twilight.

I agree. I assume Sirens would be pretty capable in their natural habitat. Might also see some Sea Ponies! (Or Sea Ponies and Mermares, if you're going off the "Under the Sparkling Sea" book.)

drop the disguise, walk up to a guard, and tell them that you accidentally crossed the border (maybe the wind force pushed you over when you were flying too close) and if they can let you back into the badlands.

Getting detected will only make things harder later on. While I do agree on INVESTIGATING WHAT APPEARS TO BE A CAVE!..., (please express caution) Personally, I think we need to know if the vines even work out here, after all, we're a long way from Everfree.
