In this episode, The Snakes delve into the dark and stormy waters of Speak Now (Taylor's Version). Each re-recording is dutifully compared against the stolen counterpart and assessed on a scale from I Knew You Were Trouble to Tell Me Why. There's an elephant in the room of course, which prompts some debate: the lyric change in Better Than Revenge. Was it blasphemous, or no big deal? Opinions may vary, and in this episode, they certainly do. The episode is concluded with an analysis of the Vault Tracks & a scathing critique of the baseless, bland, and boring 'reviews' of this project, and a commentary on the media's response to the re-recordings at large.

I love "I Can See You", but I do agree that the production is incongruous with the rest of the album. I'm thinking that maybe this is a song that existed on paper and in Taylor's voice notes, but maybe not much else... that there was no original produced track because it simply got cut before then. I also love "Castles Crumbling", but I didn't have a long history of expectation for this song. It wasn't a song I knew existed until this year... I completely missed all the Dark Blue Tennessee stuff. Taylor didn't really hook me as a fan until Red because I just wasn't a big country music listener. So my only exposure to her was through singles and live performances on TV shows and stuff... and I remember that 2010 Grammys performance and feeling pained listening to her and kind of writing her off as a studio creation. It wasn't until falling in love with Red that I even bought the Fearless and Speak Now CDs. (I still don't own Debut.) However, I was a huge Paramore fan back then, and so I was much more aware of their behind-the-scenes drama. And maybe that's why I like Castles Crumbling so much... I remember being critical of Taylor at that time because I wasn't actually a fan, and then I remember Hayley getting dragged through the mud over the Farro brothers' decision to leave the band and the grievances they aired at the time. And because I was a Paramore fan, when I finally did purchase Speak Now, Haunted and BTR were my favorites on the album. Probably still are. I would listen to those 2 on repeat, and occasionally listen to the rest, often skipping tracks. I just didn't know that much about her then and so I found it a little harder to connect. But I've probably listened to the album more recently than I ever did when I got it 10-11 years ago and have new appreciation for the album as a whole.
