What's up rockstars?! I've been enjoying or extra chats :)

I was just reading on BGG (I know) a forum about if Gen Con is worth it this year or not. I decided check out the list of (current) known companies and here's my short list:

  • Wyrmwood
  • BoardGameTables.com
  • Warhammer
  • Vorpal Board
  • Succubus Publishing
  • Mythic Games
  • Longpack Games
  • Archon Studio

So, if I do commit to going, anyone else I should add to this list? Is that worth it to you guys, or would you rather me get a 2nd camera setup/etc.? I'd also schedule some events to spend with you guys (we'd create them together, up for most anything from live streams, game sessions or even in person stuff).

Note that I WILL be attending cons and I already got my press badges for Gen Con. I just want to confirm that with the diminished attendance this is still something you guys want me to commit to this year. We're in this together after all :) I'll be working on the weekend, setting up for whichever is chosen.

So please let me know via comments anything at all about any of this :D Who of you are going?

I have my vorpal board and man do I need to learn how to use it. The possibility of it is so cool!

I don't know how covid is going over your side but we are getting more and more lockdowns here with more rates going up.

Anonymous

Is gen con worth it? How will numbers be.....so I voted for the 2nd setup or 3rd option

Anonymous

..money toward the new house ! :)

I'm going to Origins this year again, going to be at least 1/3 smaller than normal with not only the lack of companies going, but 2 other conventions going on at the same time (normally Origins takes over the center completely). I as a content creator would hold off and get more equipment, look at going next year. And would love to see you go to Origins sometime :)

TBH if Kickstarter is your thing then gonig to a convention should be about meeting up with the gamers and doing stuff together with them.... Companies are not going to pre-announce their KickStarters with playable demo's there.... As you don't focus on retail I don't really see the added value. That being said - I live in the UK, if you'd go to a convention here I'd be like: hell yeah! So it's kinda not fair for us to vote on it as well.....

Any other year id say go but this yeah, maybe not. Jump back in next year

Covid is still a big issue and I think theres still going to be a lot pulling out of these big events. I say second setup!

Anonymous

I hate my vorpal board. Scan function sucks, I do like the arm they sent. Best part of the whole thing.

Anonymous

Hi Michael, I wish I could go to Gen Con (it is not going to happen any time soon) so I will definitely not try and dissuade you.

Anonymous

Though I voted for the journey ( an adventure! ) the more logical solution would be a second setup. Its more long term and a lot more beneficial for the videos (and us) in general. Also as other mentioned covid uncertanty might make Gencon a snore fest....

Anonymous

My vote is skip this one. Maybe put the money towards a video editing laptop for next year so you can post vides on the fly. Plus This is the first big one post covid. Its going to be a mess and masks and other restrictions will cause issues.

Seems like upgrading and increasing your ease of use in your bread and butter video production and creation is the best option from my narrow view.

Well, I personally sure hope you come to Gen Con, I'd love to meet you and (hopefully) demo Earth Under Siege for you. It would make total sense if you decide to go another route, but I'm still hoping to see you there :)

I’m naive to BG conventions but is Gen Con mainly about retailers and publishers connecting and less so fan focused. Would something like Pax Unplugged be more geared towards fans?

TheKingofAverage

Where you guys on the list and I just missed you or are you going just without a booth/space? Wonder how many do that now.

TheKingofAverage

Hah! That's already taken care of elsewhere, though some funds here will go for final setup I imagine in the new place. For now this channel is 100% sell run, most of that coming from you guys :) otherwise there'd be a dip in coverage about 1.5 years from now because I wouldn't be able to back as much :D

Anonymous

I think that coverage of Gen Con is going to be oversaturated this year, so I'd rather have you invest in your setup.

Anonymous

Tough call. There’s no wrong answer here, but I’d say that with a thinner turnout this year I’d go for the long term value of newer equipment.

Totally do what you want, I'm good either way, if you feel you'll get a ton out of it and enjoy putting content together from it do it, otherwise do something else. I'm on the other side of a big ocean so its really not my place to suggest what you should do, I also feel its your channel do what makes you want to make more content as that will be the best type of content you can create. :D

TheKingofAverage

I found it to be a ton of work, but I also was able to scan in my painted miniatures for a fully digital recreation of Conan so the end result can be pretty darn impressive! I hope one day it advances enough to where I can digitize my entire collection like my Plex for movies. I've used it to play board games with some of you in the past so the value proposition is still high for me but man can it be clunky too!

TheKingofAverage

Pre-buying an editing laptop would actually be huge as that's definitely something needed for any channel travel.

TheKingofAverage

You bring up a good point! With less stuff there but probably similar level coverage it'll mean less useful effort on my part potentially. I'll keep that in mind for the future as well when planning these things.

Anonymous

I'd like to see your unique perspective with gen con.

TheKingofAverage

The wrong answer I feel would be ignoring the consensus here, which is why I wanted to verify and glad I did! Once again I am so thankful to have such a great community. I know I can count on you guys to care for what's best and correct me when I'm wrong and this is proof of it. I make these videos for you guys and yall have told me what you want plain and clear :) If I hadn't of asked though I agree, value in both :) I went to go purchase what I needed, paused and figured I'd ask you guys. Glad I did!

TheKingofAverage

hehe, so the joy I get out of what I do here is because it's useful for you guys. That's what drives me. So if yall say it's more useful and desired for me to have better footage and an easier time doing it then that's exactly what I'll do, and do it happily. Going to Gen Con would be a lot of fun for sure, but using the new equipment to make better videos for you guys (and hopefully more) and knowing that's desired is far more satisfying long term :)

TheKingofAverage

Essen 2023?! :D Good points btw. I was hoping to actually meet with some companies for interviews more than new games and perhaps see firsthand some gaming "stuff" outside of just games (like tables and such) plus some of you guys of course! But sounds like if I wait a year many more of you could attend as well and it'd just be more useful all around.

TheKingofAverage

You most certainly will! I plan on eventually attending all of the major cons in the future :) Just a matter of when.

I voted yes to go, but I want you to go to take some stress off of work and just hang out over there and relax. I would advice if you do end up making videos, leave the editing portion when you get home, that way you could just focus on Gen Con and the people around you. Although having a 2nd set up is an amazing investment, but so is vocation time from being burnt out. *Edit* Although I do agree with what most people said in the comments, I still believe you should invest in some vacation time at the very least, if not with Gen Con. I haven’t attended to one of those conventions, but I surely will some day. Probably 2025, that’s when I’ll have my RN and BSN finished.

Anonymous

Personally, I would l like for you to go to Gen Con, as I am going and would love to have the opportunity to meet you in person. However, you should do what's best for the channel. There will be more conventions in the future.
