Mayor Wilkins uses a ritual 100 days before his planned ascension to become impervious why 100 days ago, why not years ago? We have to assume the ritual has limitations. It only lasts 100 days so he uses it to protect himself during the most dangerous period just before the ascension. We don't see anyone else using this ritual, it may be hard to accomplish but it also conceivably comes with consequences - after the 100 days there would probably be negative side effects, possibly fatal for non-ascended beings.

Well said. There are a lot of hints and things said that support your theory of limitations. I imagine all of his various rituals and tributes to different demons were part of it, too, and it may also have taken him quite some time to work out everything he needed to do. I'm thinking he probably had to focus on extending his life past its normal mortality first as well. He married his "Edna Mae" in '03, I think he said (presumably 1903) and said she cursed his youth as she aged, so he already on his way. Faith said that Wilkens "built this town for demons to feed on," and he implied to Alan that he had already sold his soul. Then there was Balthazar talking about how his enemy crippled him and how when he (the enemy) rose, that Buffy and the others would wish Balthazar had just killed them then. I had looked up some info about Wilkens after this season ended, and it goes a little more in-depth about it all, but on the off-chance Cass wants to find some of this information herself, I won't get into it all. It gets pretty involved anyway!
