“Big 5 Academy Awards”. These are the five Oscar winners for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay (either adapted screenplay or original screenplay). In the 91 year history of the Academy Awards, it is nearly impossible to sweep the “Big 5”. Here are the only three films to ever do it. It Happened One Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Silence of the Lambs. I watch this movie every year on Oscars Sunday. As far as Ensemble Casts, this is near the top in my opinion. Along with some other favorite movies of mine, Rear Window, Almost Famous, Glengarry Glen Ross, Unforgiven and Goodfellas being 5 examples.

On a personal level, these type of institutions are portrayed pretty spot on in most cases. I have Tourettes Syndrome (NOT the cursing part that's glorified and used as laughter fodder by Hollywood). Mine is the - Tourette (too-RET) syndrome is a disorder that involves repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics) that can't be easily controlled. Growing up, I was never diagnosed by any professional. I was experiencing this weird thing on my own. My parents did everything they knew to try and get answers. As I dealt with the social anxiety, mocking, etc from kids (and in some cases, adults, teachers), I developed depression, severe at times, anxiety, OCD, and a few other off shoots from the disorder. Skipping forward a bit, in the 90s I was suicidal at times. Actual attempts. In one of these cases, my normal "family and solo" therapy wasn't doing enough so I was put in an institution for a bit. Not a place for a teenager to be. Especially one who doesn't understand why his body and mind are doing things he doesn't understand and nobody seems to want to help diagnose. Basically, lock the twitchy, sad kid away. was properly diagnosed in my 20s. Today, I have experienced over 40 different tics. I still maintain the anxiety and depression etc but to varying degrees of course. I share this because, yes institutions are what you probably think. At least in my experience, limited or not. There are padded rooms, straight jackets, restraint beds, etc that you see in film. There are patients who need to be there and those that are just possibly misdiagnosed. Involuntary and voluntary.

Sorry, I can ramble. Just one of the wonderful effects of a mind that never calms 🙃

I re-watched this over the weekend (2nd time I'd seen it). I completely forgot about the statutory rape. My reaction was pretty much the same as yours to that. I haven't read the book, but I was curious if McMurphy's charges were the same as in the film. After looking it up... OMG! A few interesting things I just read- the book was narrated by Chief, the author had worked as an orderly in a mental health facility and he volunteered/took part in project mkultra.
