The more we see of Trout the more I wonder if Thresher didn't somehow choose her as his heir himself (since we know the Tide hasn't actually spoken to anyone in canon and haven't seen just how that ceremony happens) because she could be the only one of his kids that's even close to being willing to let the status quo stay as it is. Hake is empathetic and Sturgeon wants everyone to live. While Trout has a good heart she definitely has had moments where we can hear just a bit of Thresher's biases coming through, so maybe he would have picked her because she could potentially continue on putting the Family above the Daisies. I wonder, even if I'm wrong, if that line of thinking on Petrel's part could have anything to do with why they attack her later. It might not be that they wanted to just kill whoever the next King/Queen was but that they didn't want it to be Trout specifically.

Thresher himself in the prologue said that if he had a choice in the matter, he would have picked Sturgeon. But he coulda been lying 👀 and you’re right, we don’t know the details of the leadership ceremony (but it is kinda hinted in Ch.2 that Trout is his favorite due to her loyally giving him mangos her entire life, presumably more than her siblings which made him “pick” her, cuz he’s a crab and just wants food). Either way I find your take super interesting, especially Thresher had more influence in the process of the leadership ceremony than we are led to believe.
