Hello everybody. I am almost happy with the Ranma/Zeref confrontation at this point, I just need to cut down on the jawing, add a bit more of the history of Zeref and the First Master, and then…Grammarly the chapter… UGH. Still, I should be done it by Friday at the latest and sending it off to it’s first editor.

Anyway, I was asked about a month ago by Wildebranch if I would ever consider writing out a HP/World of Warcraft story. Now, I have to say I have never played the MMORPG World of Warcraft. It’s just not my thing, and frankly if I had any inclination in that area I doubt I would be as prolific a writer as I am. But I greatly enjoyed Warcraft 2, it’s add-on, and even parts of Warcraft 3. PARTS. I also really like quite a few of the female characters. And I enjoyed my two most recent FILFy chapters, with Danan and Tir Na Nog and the exploration aspect of it. So I came up with this concept. Which was actually easier than to concentrate on than a full chapter for some reason, probably due to the note-like manner I do these in.

As always, I share this concept idea with the caveat: it will be a VERY long time, if ever that I get to this fic. I like the concept, and would like to play with a world as wide open and big as Azeroth, but I have all my current stories to finish before I take on a project like this one. ATP and at least one other story must be finished before I take on a full time fic.

Hmm… unless… no. that way lies madness. Ignore this bit please LOL.

Anyway, here we go:

Story Title: Azeroth’s Phoenix.

Harry Potter had led a somewhat painful life. Raised to be a martyr by a well-meaning but extremely manipulative old man, his eventual victory against one Dark Lord had pained a target on his back from then on. It began when Pureblood extremists from Italy attempted to kill him just as he was getting back with Ginny. It went downhill from there.

Despite his best efforts to be a recluse, the problems of the Wizarding World never went away, and seemed to always drag him into them. On the one hand, he was always being sought out to fight the latest Dark Lord, or to help convince this or that recalcitrant Wizarding government that they needed to tow the line and not mess with the non-magicals.  Furthermore Dark Wizards the world over wanted to kill him in order to make a name for themselves. And there were always those who equated magical might with being in the right.  The Pureblood issue never went away, it was just matched by the ‘New Wizard’ movement, halfbloods and muggleborn creating their own extremists. That they held up Hermione and Harry himself at times as their role models never ceased to annoy him. Harry had never been able to have a proper life away from combat, away from death.

All his life, Harry had hoped to find normality. To find peace. To have a family. His notoriety ruined all of that. And eventually, even the most powerful mage will die. So it was with Harry. Wounds had finally caught up to him, and he had finally succumbed, though not before taking his opponent down first. Now, the last curse which had hit him, a slow acting curse which attacked the heart, was going to finally kill him. Harry found himself somewhat looking forward to it, really. This life had long since become a burden.

Now, here Harry lay in Shell Cottage, Bill and Fleur’s home, warded and fideliused, with Fawkes, his sole remaining companion, the secret Keeper. Discovering a phoenix was strong enough to keep such a secret had been very much a surprise, almost as much a surprise as Fawkes deciding to bond with him after his second familiar’s death. No one would be able to profit from his death. His money, his family heirlooms, the Hallows, a few portraits. All of it would remain here, hidden forever.

Thus, alone as he had been for years, Harry Potter died, passing away with a smile on his face. Or… so he would have hoped. Instead, as his body breathed its last, there was a bright, incandescent flash as his body burned from the inside, and suddenly… Harry gasped, sitting upright, staring down not at his old body, but the body he had during his second year of Hogwarts, while all around him, a fire rages from his bed “What the bloody cocking hell!?”

“Finally. I must say Master, you have been most annoying in your desire to not meet me in person. Now, perhaps we can have a chat.”

Turning Harry sees a woman standing to one side of his bed, only now noticing that everything around him has frozen, even the fires of his rebirth. Not that this fact remains in his head for long, as the fact the woman in front of him has a face of a grinning skull takes up his attention. “Master…you’re Death then?”

“Oh indeed, Master, and I have a proposition for you. A way forward, if you will, away from your current life. Unless, of course, you would like to simply remain here? I’m certain glamours and whatnot would allow you to have a semi-normal life. Maybe.”

Narrowing his eyes, Harry stares at Death, then sighs. Glamours and whatnot would indeed let him live a normal life, right up until he entered a zone warded against such. Or ran into violence. Or the goblins informed the rest of the Wizarding World that no, in fact Harry wasn’t dead, which would start a ‘witch’ hunt for him.

And really, what there here? Harry had long become disillusioned with the Wizarding World, and frankly, the nonmagical world didn’t really interest him either. Too busy, too many people, too much noise. And there was something in Death’s tone. A tone of someone on a mission, someone who wanted something from him. It was a tone Harry hated, but he had gotten all-too used to it. And whatever she/it said, it was obvious where the power lay here.

“Would it help if I said I never wanted to own all the hallows?”

“Duly noted. Now, does that mean you want to hear my offer?”

A conversation later, Harry agrees to trying out a new life elsewhere on a planet called Azeroth. Pros: lots of downtime between bouts of intense violence and death. Cons: see intense violence, and the overarching mission. A mission against those who would pervert Death’s realm.

But despite that, and despite the whole ‘Master’ thing being more sarcasm than anything else, Death is willing to modify certain things.

Agreement reached, Harry Potter ‘dies’ on Earth, his cottage burning around him, with everything he possessed. Or so people on Earth will think for a good, long time.

Harry instead appears in a seemingly random place, a place deep in a massive forest, ancient beyond anything he has ever seen, utterly alone, and once more in his child’s body, knowing only the name of the planet and the continent he has arrived on: Azeroth, and Kalimdor. “Well, I always did like Indiana Jones type movies...”

Things this fic will contain:

1. Master (NOT) of Death. Death is not under Harry’s control, despite the fact he is kind of out of her area of influence. He is not so much undying as perpetually renewing. The phoenix and basilisk blood within him has basically made him into a phoenix/human/basilisk chimera. He will age slowly for a human wizard, but he will die, only to be renewed at the time he became such, that is, at eleven years old.

a. Immense magical power. Harry is going to be a magical powerhouse. He was the equivalent of a Bunker buster among tank rounds back home. On Azeroth, he’s going to become stronger all the time.

b. Immune to poison and fire thanks to his special heritage. He also has a very strong affinity for fire and Light magic, and can spit poison that is so strong it acts like an acid.

c. Death Magic. Harry will be able to feel and understand necromantic energies and how to disrupt them.

d. Hallows. Harry will have all three of them, and will be willing to use the Ring of Resurrection at need, something again I don’t have any of the other Harrys doing.

e. Semi-Recluse Harry. With a life ruined by being around people, Harry will be perfectly content to be by himself for loooong periods of time. He’s also somewhat eager to simply have fun, not remembering a time when he really could for long periods of time since he was in Hogwarts. On the other hand he also has a strong desire occasionally for companionship, so it is an odd dichotomy.

f. Dragon catnip. Thanks to his basilisk side and being able to speak Parseltongue, which dragons can also speak, he both smells amazingly interesting and can even talk to the dragons.  Every flight but the Black Flight will be interested in him in some fashion for good or ill.

2. Time lapses galore. I am going to put him in Kalimdor well before the events of even the first Orcish invasion, let alone anything else. So needless to say, we will not see every day, month or even year he spends wandering the forests.

a. Night Elf Introduction. Harry will eventually make the acquaintance of the Night Elves, first vis Centaurius, and then through Tryande. Indeed, she and Harry will become fast friends eventually, during the time when the Night Elves were in full seclusion, facing

b. Explorer Harry. Harry will be the main character for many chapters as he basically explores Kalimdor from one end to another.  This will let me play with a lot of the different species and places not only in Kalimdor, but beyond.

c. More an addendum and something which must be said. Azeroth is a planet. Therefore it is round. Nuff said.

d. Can’t we all just get along? As stated, harry will travel all over Kalimdor, and may or may not play diplomat. Imagine, if you will, the Tauren becoming allies of the Night Elves against the Centaurs, and what that could mean for the future. Or Harry finding the Naga long before they are ready to make their own appearance. And then there’s the Pandarans. Harry likes a drink as much as the next man after all.

e. Harry the student and the master. Harry will eagerly absorb everything magically speaking he can learn from Tyrande and her her night elves, Centaurius, even the Tauren, Trolls and their shamans. In return he will teach them some of his own magic spells, and runes.

3. Humanity Hell..yeah…? Harry, aged once more down to twelve years old will start to interact with humanity sometime around the Second Orc War, but before that he won’t have had much to do with any of them, even the Kirin Tor of Dalaran, and that is going to set some noses out of joint. He also is going to be very anti-authoritarian, unwilling to be tied down, but willing to lead by example in times of war. That will have him butting heads with literally every king in the alliance at one point or another, to say nothing of the reaction to his apparent youth.

a. He will also be very secretive in terms of who knows about his primary secret.  For most people he will simply be a human mage from across the ocean who has delved into ancient elven magic. Of course, the High Elves will know different, but will have been told to leave him alone.

b. Runic expansion. Runes and their abilities will be something Harry shares freely.

c. The alliance stands. With Harry’s aid, magic and runes craft, the Alliance will have an easier time of the Second War. Alterac though will still betray them, and still need an ass kicking.

d. Scourgify? – the whole death cult thing which starts Arthas’s fall from grace will not happen as they did in canon. There will still be a third war, and there will still be a Lich King, but it might not be Arthas.

e. Tech and magic. I really would like to play around with some steampunk/magic elements. If I can’t try to figure it out in SBH, then I would like to play with it here. Rune powered warjacks, magically infused cannons, and so forth. Of course, this will also bring new problems…

f. In the game, Stormwind becomes, well quite assholish. If the Death Cult and the Scourge rise, then I will have another nation also survive. Stormgaurd perhaps, to offset Wynn and his general level of assholery.   Lordaeron though doesn’t seem to have the kind of natural defenses that could stop a ravening horde of undead. I am uncertain on Gilneas.

g. No purebloods here. In some fanfics and some of the books (apparently, correct me if I’m wrong) but there was a group of humans moving behind the scenes to undermine the other races. Harry might stumble upon this and he will not be pleased. No matter who is a part of it.

h. Natural leader. Like it or not, Harry will attract people, humans, High and Night elves, and he will eventually lead his own band. Not an adventurer’s guild, but a real military company eventually.

4. REAL warfare. I loved the original games and their tongue in cheek humor, but no game can be really equal to the task of showing how war can ravage a land, the toll it takes, and everything else. One major issue the games do is they don’t really show the horde or alliance taking the losses they had to in the War. The Horde should have been utterly broken, but in the lifetime of one leader they are back and just as powerful as ever? The Alliance loses most of it’s nations thanks to the Scourge, but can still be almost cavalier with their armies and fleets? Yes, I know that’s an over-simplification, but even so, I have been displeased by how war is treated in the fics and even the little bit of the books I read.

a. While Harry won’t be leading vast armies, he will be on the frontline of many an important battle, and

5. Harem. Duh. Due to his longevity and the nature of it though, the romance in this fic is going to be very different in comparison to past fics. Some will be very slow to form, others will be very quick, but shortlived.

a. Casual sex. Harry isn’t going to be a prude (not after getting to know the Trolls anyway), and will have realized that the idea of having a permanent, long term lover is not going to happen unless that lover too is immortal. And those races are going to look at him somewhat askance given the nature of his own immortality. So for at least a few lifetimes, Harry isn’t going to find anyone he can really settle down with.

b. Dragons need loving too. A few female dragons will be among the first to think of Harry as something along the lines of a permanent mate. Ysondre is one definite, perhaps her  mother, uncertain. Alexstraza is a definite possibility. She will enjoy the idea of eternal renewal. Having an option other than Malygos as a leader might have Saragosa jumping at the chance and more. Not Onxyia however. All Earth aspect dragons are not going to be friends with Harry. He smells of death to them and no other – Death is not happy with so-called Deathwing and his brats, no sir.

c. Sylvanas Windrunner. They will get to know one another during the Second War, and then again during the rise of the scourge. She will most likely NOT become undead in this fic. This will probably be the quickest relationship to go from friendship to relationship.

d. Jaina Proudmoore. This one will be a struggle, and will most likely start off with a crush, then casual flirting, until Jaina worms her way into Harry’s heart. But to do more than be one of Harry’s sometimes lovers, she will need to find her own key to immortality. What that might be… is up in the air.

e. Tyrande. Another slow one, Tyrande will slowly find herself attracted to Harry despite his human propensity for action and Change. Indeed, that will be a bonus in her books, and after literal thousands of years alone, the idea of moving on is not without merit either. Nor were she and Malfurion actually wed. And lets face it, after winning the girl, leading a rebellion instead of consulting with her or, you know, spending time with Tyrande, he gives himself up to the Emerald Dream for 10,000 years! Even for a night elf, that’s a long darn time.

6. Canon is my plaything. This should be assumed given almost all of my previous works, but it has to be said here considering that, to the best of my knowledge, no fic really seeks to change the history of events prior to the Third War/Scourge era. I do. Oooh you betcha I do.

a. Character deaths. Permanent ones. If Harry kills someone, you better believe their soul is going to be handed straight over to Death, regardless of previous commitments.

b. Character living. Luthor Lives. Hated that one mission where you see him and his party being massacred in Warcraft 2. Going to save him this time around. What all this will change is a mystery right now, but it will occur. To say nothing of the later paladins who died against Arthas.

c. No enslavement of the red dragon flight – with Deathwing having been sent on prior to the orcs arrival, there is no way that even with the ancient Dragon Soul (think it’s the name) that Alexstrasa could be enslaved.

d. No Forsaken. I think that without Sylvanas at the helm, the Forsaken would never have gotten organized, so if the moment of inattention occurs, they would have been wiped out instead of

e. Early Demon sightings. I think the Demons will probably show up in the Second War to ‘aid’ their Horde pawns, bringing in the Night Elves out of seclusion, and causing other trouble everywhere.

i. The Horde altered. With more demonic intervention, Doomhammer’s attempt at a takeover is crushed, and more and more orcs drink the blood of demons.

ii. No thrall? Possible. Depending on how the war ends. Regardless, the orcs will actually have been decimated in the war, rather than merely caged up to come again. That act does not pass the SAN check in the original, and won’t here.

iii. Gul’dan the Dark – he will be a major magical antagonist in the story from the moment he is introduced and on. Prepare for magical horrors to make any human dark lord quail in fear.

f. Medivh resurrected. Another enemy that will try to avoid Death, he will be the first real magical threat Harry will be forced to face, having survived the first war thanks in part to having discovered some of Harry’s rune-based magic and a few of his spells.

g. Old Gods playing new tricks. The naga won’t be the only ancient enemy that makes an early appearance.

Needless to say this seems a bit more haphazard and disjointed than most concepts, and I am not quite happy with Harry’s back story.  But I think it shows where I am going with this idea. Again though, remember that I will not be following up on this until well into the future.  I still felt like sharing it though, what with FILFy still not showing up online.

This has been done before, but those are some of my all-time favorite fics. I especially like the strategic impact of distributing foreign knowledge-based abilities, both in them and in your fics. I'd love this idea.

I've seen several fics like this before and amazingly most of them have been done well. I have never played any of the warcraft games but the universe is fascinating. I would love to see what you do with such a large universe as your plaything. I have not seen Harry put into this universe before anything has happened so it would be interesting to see how you distract him from main events that you think should still happen but that he would interrupt.
