Chapter 257: Awakening

A massive pillar of water rose up in the air, making Kizaru move some distance away from the sea.

More pillars of water were formed out of nowhere, exploding upwards and making the coastline recede.

"What is this?!"

"What's going on!"

The marines who were woken up by the tremors were panicking, and they were not the only ones.

Kizaru stared at the water with an impressive gaze, but inside, he was getting increasingly nervous.

"Issho!, is this her? Where is she?"

Fujitora was not listening to him, he was already busy trying to make sense of the situation using his unique skills.

"Vivi? Is this you?" Nami stared at the sea with hopeful eyes.

The ground kept shaking and more pillars of water rose in the air.

"Well…this is certainly not a natural phenomenon. " Sabo said.

They all could do nothing but stare as more water rose upwards.

The torrents of water grew in size and the gap between them became smaller.

Before they realized it, the entire island was surrounded by a wall of water with a height of two miles( over 3km).

After the wall was formed, the water stopped moving and remained stationary in an impossible position. Like a wave that was frozen in time.

The ground had also stopped shaking, whatever this phenomenon was, it seemed to be over, for now.

"This is impossible!, no devil fruit should be capable of doing something of this scale!" Kizarus's usual calm demeanor was nowhere to be seen. His eyes were open like plates and he was yelling nervously.

"Issho!, answer me, where is she?!"

"Everywhere…" Fujitors finally spoke.

"Everywhere?, I cannot feel her presence at all!" exclaimed Kizaru.

"It is faint, but her aura is all around us…it's massive, like is evolving everything…I can't explain it. But I do understand something now."

"What is it?" Kizaru asked with exasperation.

"I understand the reason for the Elders's orders…to bring her alive. "Commented Fujitora.

"What are you talking about?!." Kizaru was getting angry with his partner. He didn't see how any of this was helping now.

"Did you know? the higher the potential a devil fruit has, the harder is to achieve its awakening. The most powerful logias and mythical zoan fruits usually require something extra too. Going through a traumatic event or a truly dangerous situation where your own life is on the line. Mastery of the fruit is often not enough." Fujitora explained.

"I didn't need something like that to awaken my fruit." Rebuked Kizaru.

"Of course. All rules have exceptions. You were considered a once-in-a-century genius and even then, it took you fifteen years to awaken your fruit after gaining your ability."

Kizaru frowned. He didn't like to mention that fact and never told him that, but it was obvious that Fujitora had read his secret file.

"Get to the point!, we have a situation here. We need to find that girl and-"

"And kill her?...if you can't see it then you are more blind than me." Said Fujitora.

"I'll get to the point thought…I don't think we have a lot of time left."

"What if what she said about her fruit being a Divine Zoan was true?" Continued Fujitora.

"A fruit that powerful may need something more than a near-death experience…maybe the user had to literally die in order to awaken its true abilities. If that was the case and the Elders knew about this, then their order made a lot of sense. They weren't trying to protect her…they were trying to prevent her awakening."

"So this is my fault?..." Kizaru looked around at the wall of water that rose so high in the air that was blocking most of the light,  making it almost seem nighttime.

"I didn't stop you. So is also my fault. "Admitted Fujitora.

"What do we do now? How do we fight…this." Kizaru asked.

"Can we fight it? No devil fruit should be capable of something like this. If this is truly the awakened power of a God…what can we do?" Wondered Fujitora.

"We have to try something, damn it!. I refuse to lie down and die." Exclaimed Kizaru.

"That was not my suggestion either. But we need to think this through. Even if we had a way to kill her in her current state. What do you think will happen to all this water surrounding the island?" Asked Fujitora.

Kizaru realized the biggest problem. Even if she did nothing else, just releasing the hold on the massive wall of water that is currently surrounding Dressrosa would be enough to sink the island and kill everyone inside.

"She wouldn't do that. Her crew is on the island. If anything, she at least cares for them. She won't kill them." Said Kizaru.

He knew the Strawhats were not like most pirate crews. Their members care for each other. Two years back, they all risked their lives to save Nico Robin, even if she had only been with them for a short time.

"Yes, you are correct about that. She looked very distressed during her fight with you. She was likely worried about the safety of that girl I had captured." Commented Fujitora.

Kizaru turned his stare to the place where Nami and Sabo were standing.

"Cat burglar Nami. Yes, if we capture the girl, we can then use her for-"

"Wait!, something is happening!" Fujitora said in alarm.

They all saw ripples starting to appear on the walls of water.

"What do you think she is doing?" Asked Sabo to Nami.

"I don't know.  But I have this strange feeling…is really Vivi the one doing all of this?"

All of a sudden, they heard the sound of water moving.

"Careful!" That was all Fujitora had time to say.

A series of shiny objects came out of the mass of water and shot out towards the group of marines.

Before they had the chance to react, half of them found themselves impaled on the long ice spears that came out of the water wall.

Their Captain had received three spears, one went through his skull while the other two pierced his torso before being embedded on the ground.

The remaining marines screamed in horror.

It had begun.
