Gandalf and Aragorn (even though Strider is a hard ass name) are my favorites so far. I can't wait to see how it all unfolds soon! Much love - Cole

Just joined your Patreon. As someone who loves to watch reactions to Lord of the Rings, I could tell in the first few minutes of the YouTube video that I wanted to see your entire reaction. And since you said that you came to these movies right after Harry Potter, I wanted to share that J.K. Rowling was a huge fan of Tolkien and you can see the influences from LotR on HP. One of the biggest inspirations that she took is how the Ring is very similar to a Horcrux. The very narration at the beginning of this movie says how Sauron poured his cruelty, his malice and his desire to control all life. So like the Horcruxes, the Ring contained some of Sauron’s very essence. And since you have already posted this entire trilogy, I can add that the Ring’s destruction destroys Sauron in the same way that destroying the Horcruxes destroyed Voldemort.

Having now watched the reaction I’m going to expand on a couple of your questions. The test Galadriel passed was the test of being confronted with the Ring and what it would do to her, but resisting it. The larger backstory of Galadriel had her always desiring power over her domain. And she does have it to an extent within her kingdom of Lothlorian. Her elven ring of adamant keeps things from decaying within her realm. She is one of the oldest elves in Middle Earth and one of the most noble due to her lineage. Her gift to Gimli was also very special. Besides her graciousness to Gimli, despite the typical strife between Elves and Dwarfs in this world, there is a backstory that makes this more meaningful. Way back in her history she had a cousin who was one of the most creative Elves ever. But he was also proud and swayed by the Dark Lord predecessor to Sauron. You heard him mentioned in relation to the Balrog, as Morgoth. Anyway, Galadriel’s cousin was working on creating these special jewels. And he wanted strands of Galadriel’s hair because it was supposed to shine with a holy type of light that he wanted to capture in his jewels. She turned him down three times because she felt he was unworthy of this gift. So granting the gift to Gimli was very special. And you can tell by the look on Legolas’ face that he appreciated that fact. As far as the Balrog of Morgoth goes, I expect someone has already told you that Gandalf, and the other wizards, are actually a type of angelic being in this world, sent to help in the fight against Sauron. They are supposed to guide more than interfere, which is why you see less magic from Gandalf than you might want. Unfortunately, Saruman fell under Sauron’s influence. The Balrog is actually the same type of angelic being as Gandalf. But way back during the Dark Lord Morgoth’s reign he corrupted a bunch of these beings, some of whom became Balrogs. Morgoth’s story is very similar to the story of Satan becoming a fallen angel and taking various angels with him. Sauron is actually included in this mix and was considered a Lieutenant of Morgoth. In the past there were battles where elves fought Balrogs, typically unsuccessfully. And you can see the fear on Legolas’ face when Gandalf tells them what they are facing. So Gandalf and the Balrog were kind of evenly matched. They are both fire spirits. When Gandalf tells the Balrog that he is a servant of the secret fire. He is basically saying that he is a servant of the ultimate god of this universe, who possesses the fire of creation. Whereas, he says that the Balrog is a flame of Udun. This could be thought of as something like a flame of hell. I’m sorry if this is way more information than you really wanted. But you did seem to be generally interested in both the fight with the Balrog and what was going on with Galadriel. As you have already watched the rest of these movies you might have already gotten these answers from other people. But as a huge Tolkien fan, I couldn’t help sharing and I only touched on these topics.
