In the manga you get an epilogue for the final chapter that shows what happens to the surviving Japanese task force and SPK members a year after Light's death. Near becomes the new L, the world notices Kira is gone and crime rates return to normal but in the very last scene you see masses off people praying religiously for Kira's return.
