To clarify about the Upper Ranks, there can be only one spot per rank at a time. They have to fight each other to get any higher on the totem pole. The next arc will answer some of your questions.

I am so happy you have DS three times this week! The next arc is here!! Daki and Gyutaro have a tragic story but nevertheless, questions what is good and evil in the end. Daki, her birth name was Ume after the word baidoku (梅=plum + 毒=poison）＝syphilis. The character 梅 by itself is read as "Ume". The samurai were higher in society compared to those working in the Red-Light District of Yoshiwara (one of the three legal red-light districts in Japan). In the manga, the customer berates her brother Gyutaro. This is the reason she attacks the samurai with the hairpin.

2023-08-15 15:52:03 Like someone mentioned earlier, there's only one demon for each rank at a time, so Douma (the one that turned them) is no longer upper six. Also fun fact: apparently the reason Ume stabbed the samurai in the eye was because he called her brother ugly.
