What a great analysis at the end. Although Junpei's bully had nothing to do with his mother's death, he had everything to do with his emotional response as a result due to the trauma he put Junpei through when you see how easily Mahito was able to manipulate him into believing the bully was the perpetrator. And looking at those cigarette burns on his forehead, it also makes perfect sense when he says to his mom how he does not like seeing her smoke.

gotta tell you, do NOT underestimate how evil Mahito can be. Nanami saw it right away, that's why he mentions that they need to end him as soon as possible.
