I got up at 4am to clear out all the old college reference books I never look at. In their place I have finally begun to shelve all the books I actually use as reference, examples, and mind-broadening!

Now, some of these are stories - old and new - that involve transformations. But many are real reference books for me. I think it is very important to try and read as much as possible about; reality theory; human bodies unlike my own; the history of sex, lust, love, and the taboo; prose and sequential art through the ages; and to understand the evolution of the standards of beauty in society, among much much more.

Now, I'm not saying that I'll ever point to a panel in HELD WITHIN and say, "I wrote this in response to Dr. McBody's 1945 dissertation of quack science." But I do absolutely believe that having a solid understanding of as much as possible - and my own place within it all - helps create a better overall body of work that can involve a clearer empathy towards characters unlike myself and a route that helps avoid stereotyping and generalization.

Also, some of the books simply have boobs in them, and I am not above that.

If you want to learn more about any of these books, leave a note!

I'd never heard of The Trouble With Being a Horse before, and after looking it up on Amazon, I can't tell - is it an actual novel? One review calls it a "chapter book", which sounds like it's one of those books for kids where each page has two sentences on it.

I don't know what that description means, but I can tell you it is an actual book in the first person. I have not read it in full yet, but I have found the portions where she wishes to be a horse, deals with the ramifications, and lives a while as one. I can also say that it looks like this wasn't just an "I was dreaming story" where - SPOILER! - when she does get turned back it is clear that she has been missing for a while. Haven't read enough of it to give a quality review, but certainly stuff in there I want to read more thoroughly.
