Simple domain isn't new but it's only been used one time in the past by Miwa. It's important to note that it doesn't exactly cancel or negate a domain expansion (atleast not completely). The only reason mahitos domain broke is due to his injury. It's a technique which creates a space extending around a few meters from the caster which basically overrides or cancels any techniques cast within that small radius. Very few people know how to use it but it's very useful.

Mahito has shown his domain before he got it during his fight with yuji and nanamin, and yes he has gotten his ass whooped before but that was basically a 3 on 1 he fought yuji, nanamin and for touching yuji soul and by extension sukuna's soul sukuna fucked him up leaving him at near death. Mahito getting fucked up in basically nearly a 3 on 1 isn't really a bad thing.
