Thats how he knew who Hercules was immediately and he also knew his weakness (exactly how many lives he had and how many were left). It's why he was surprised that Hercules surpassed his myth by continuing to fight after his lives were all taken out by him because his eyes show him the definitive limits of abilities and people as well.
