Nah, just more character exposition. I can understand how others could find it boring but I don't agree it's trashy.

Yeah, it's canon and the anime does a good job of expanding on stuff that was only done briefly in the manga. I'm caught up on the current episode of the anime and the latest chapter of the manga, and as far as I can recall the anime has done no "true" filler episodes in the sense that it wasn't in the manga to begin with.
