I’m with you guys on the exploration aspects! Everything behind that door was so, so cool. (And as a side note, if you like that kind of eerie vibe of wonder and the unknown, you might love the movie “Prometheus”!) Also related to a cool thing I heard you bring up about Chief’s feelings on letting soldiers die: in the very first Halo novel, “The Fall of Reach”, we actually get to spend a ton of time with him growing up in Spartan training and facing the harsh realities of war, and dealing with the fact that even if your team is the best of the best — and even if you win — not everyone’s going to make it back. As squad leader, he agonizes over everyone he loses, and struggles with the concept of “lives spent” vs. “lives wasted”. When one of his fellow Spartans gives his life to take down a Covenant ship and allow his friends to escape, while also showing the rest of humanity the Covenant *could* be beaten, however, he finally learns the difference.
