There's a funny scene in the book that they understandably left out of the series here where Li Yao gets a visit from the disabled vets organization. It seems that people who get disabled during the exam are given the same status as veterans who become disabled in combat. And this world is very generous to their vets, so even if he were to stop right here and take the government benefits, he'd be living pretty well. The old vet who comes to see him in the hospital is quite emotional, and Li Yao responds appropriately but turns him down in the end. Just thought you all would find this interesting.
