You should always expect when they adapt any written work to the visual medium, there will be parts of the story left out. There are a couple of reasons for this. The visual medium is the version with the least amount of information available to the audience; in written works, characters' feelings, thoughts, as well as other information can be inserted at any point,without losing the pace and momentum of the story. This is not the case for the visual medium, because you have to tell an overall series story over the course of the show, and every episode in and of itself must also have the main elements of good stories: exposition, conflict, climax, epilogue. We don't get to see many epilogues in these shows, in many cases, because the source material is still publishing. The other reason they leave out parts of the story is to entice people to buy the source material. It feels like bonus content when you read all the stuff they cut out. This is especially true for Japanese anime, because the average person in Japan commutes an average of 45-90 minutes everyday, so the light novel & manga industry there is much bigger than elsewhere.

It's not that they're leaving out things - they are completely changing the story content as well as sequencing. When I said they were scrambling the story I meant they really were scrambling the story. This is not my first adaptation rodeo. They were doing okay till they got here, but suddenly they're screwing a lot of things up and creating entirely new scenes and sequences. They could have compressed the story without making wholesale changes. To contrast, the team doing BTTH is doing a much better job aligning to the story even when they have to compress. The BTTH manhaua however is a steaming pile of horse hockey.

I'm confused, so the adaptation to the manhua, or the graphic novel version, is going badly? As I am almost strictly watching these stories, once they are made into donghua, it surprises me to see a fan of the source novel say that, it must be a really really bad adaptation. On another note, the animation this season sucks, don't you think? I'm disappointed in the pallid, almost grey skin tones they've chosen, mc looks like a zombie.

I'm comparing season 5 animation to the original novel. I never saw a manhua for Stellar Transformations/Legend of the Immortals. As for Battle Through the Heavens/Doupo Cangqiong Nian Fan, the comic version departs so far from Novel its atrocious. I stopped reading it. They manhua and animation adaptations for The Great Ruler were both butchered. Thankfully the BTTH animation is much closer to the novel. The changes I've noticed so far are not significant. As for season 5 color, without seeing a raw source video its hard to know if the color pallet issue is the animation itself or a re-encoding issue.
