Having a gourd time in the field

-----

Both of these buddies are kind of fall flavored. I love a bit of Autumn scenery, honestly.

As i mentioned on social media, i've been wondering about my process a bit. Generally, i thumbnail everything (a very rough, very small sketch), i blow it up, and i do the 'resketch' phase on top of that. Then, it's ready for inking, and i spend like 2 hours inking a page. only then can i start coloring.

However, the ink is always a little weaker than the sketch, and it takes 2 hours to do! So, thinking about how to work faster, i remembered the old Hourly Sketch Sessions i used to do. Sketched, then colored the lines, and then i just colored under it. Personally i think it looks 'a bit worse' but it's so much faster than that third inking step.

But, i don't really know if the 3d backgrounds would mesh with that lighter coloring style, so it definitely has some drawbacks.

But either way, i wanted to experiment a bit with just coloring a picture without inking, and see how people feel about it. If i could just go from resketch to coloring the comics, i'd be able to up production without hurting myself.

If anyone has any good examples of artists who color directly under their sketches, i'd love to see. Just name them, i can go look them up.

Anyway, i'll be doing some more experiments with that, to find a good looking, fast way to go about things. I'm only one person and passiontail doesn't bring in enough to actually hire on an assistant yet, so i've gotta figure something out. I'm unable to get as much work out as i would like.

The color without inking approach really works here because of the Autumn stuff.

Looks pretty crisp to me, fall colors~ <3

I don't know enough about art to realistically offer any sort of assessment of the pros and cons of a new process. For what its worth, there's definitely something different about this art, though I can't really say its lesser for it. Hope you're feeling better!

It does have a different feel, but I personally love the raw, imperfect feeling of sketch lines. It's easier to imply motion, or dense fur, without drawing defined little lines. I switched my inking tool to CSP's "oil paint flat brush" which also gives the little bit of natural variation in line width due to the angled nature of the brush. Similar to a calligraphy pen. I lean into it so much that my defining artist style it seems, is that I digitally color pencil drawings (sfw example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/39790333/ , nsfw example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/31193194/). I try to emulate that effect drawing fully digitally too (sfw example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/45209871/ , nsfw example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/39169136/). I have also been experimenting here and there with crazy line weights (nsfw: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52931319/ and https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52931121/). I think if you free yourself of the constraint of things needing to be precise and defined, you can experiment a lot more with the implications of certain textures and effects. Of course it's up to you and what you value the most in your own art.

I ended up using this process on the page of SMWTOB that i just put up, and tbh it's mostly indistinguishable but it saved me 2.5 hours! I really like faux-traditional media, but my 'style' has been like perfectly clean edges down to the micron (for finished stuff anyway) so i worry it might bother people. Still, i think these experiments were successes. That coloring method with all the pencil lines for the fur looks like it would take A G E S, jeez~ Looks great though! And personally i wouldn't call that 'crazy' line weights, it's not super unusual to see and looks very good in these examples! Honestly 'what i value' at this point is time. My hands are only usable for so many hours per day, and i really, REALLY wish i could get more comic out there. So sacrificing a bit of shit that most people can't even tell i'm doing anyway is definitely worth it to inch towards more stories coming out, you know? As long as people don't leave in disgust because my 'old style was better' lol
