Just to point out that the policemen that showed up weren't the real police. They were Lina's forces on standby, that's why they showed up so quickly and weren't suspicious about the conversation. Also, regarding how the parasites/spirits work, it was somewhat explained on Episode 3. The main thing about this show is to understand that they have an Information Dimension (called Idea). You could imagine it as the world being a computer simulation. Information bodies that populate Idea are called Eidos, and make up every living thing, objects and phenomena. Magic is the power to alter these information bodies (i.e. their properties, such as acceleration, forces, etc.). Parasites/spirits/etc. are information bodies that don't show up in the real world and in principle don't manifest, similar to viruses or bacteria (hence the naming). So you could think of parasites as kind of computer viruses that just exist and wander in Idea. In Episode 4 we found out that these specific parasites/viruses they're dealing with came in through a micro black hole through presumably a different dimension. This show's magic system is pretty well thought out actually, and wouldn't be that surprising if something similar was ever discovered in the real world.
