Though the character's origin is (much) different in the LN, the personality is still much the same, though not quite as much adoration for Ye Xiu -- Shaotian can still be a pest, but their relationship is a lot more "equal", since they've both been in the scene for years, both hugely famous players. He has the informal title of Sword Saint, reserved for the top-ranking Blade Master in all Glory. I forget exactly why Ye Xiu needed him for this dungeon in the LN, but it was at least partly because he's immensely skilled and so would help close the skills gap between Ye Xiu's team and the Excellent Era team. Maybe also because the new strategy for beating that dungeon required not only certain Blade Master skills, but someone Ye Xiu could trust to quickly grasp and carry out the plan with precision and speed. Anyways, it's easy to see why many (including myself probably) have Huang Shaotian as their favourite character 😁️

FUN FACT: Partly because of Shaotian's unrelenting trash talk assault on opponents, the Alliance actually banned voice chat during pro competitions, some years back. Only text chat is used in the LN, and this text is broadcast to viewers to observe intra/inter-team comms. So this is another point where the LA is different, likely because it's easier for TV.

Without the voice chat ban, he's a HUGE asset. Maybe you can clarify, but what were they doing chucking enemies into the mountain? Did we have it right, or was something else going on there? -Brandon

Yes, you have it right. Basically, Ye Xiu figured that they could save significant time by trapping/piling the undead inside a crack in the mountain, rather than spending time to deplete their HP and kill them. You see, the record set by Sun Xiang and the Excellent Era team was already pretty extreme, as it should be since they was all pros. In order to overcome that, Ye Xiu would need to think a lot harder and find some radical way to get past. Since you asked, I've checked out the novel again -- Shaotian was needed specifically for the "Sword Draw" and "Upward Slash" skills of the Blade Master. Shaotian's job was primarily to use these skills to lift the enemies into the air, at just the right precise position for Ye Xiu to use "Delivery Gun" to send them into the crack.

If you're interested, to contrast this episode with the novel, the part where Shaotian first showed up in the cafe, I've put up a snippet here: https://pastebin.com/HREviNJx (Naturally, there's no spoilers at all, it's only a snippet)
