Today i show you another vintage pinup model who has an amazing story.
You know, in the technology field standards are very often decided by only one subject: p0rn. Betamax was a better technology for the home video but p0rn industry adopted VHS and it become the standard. This is the most famous example of what i said, but what if the image compression technology, was studied and experimented on a Playboy Magazine pinup? Yes, that's it! If we can send and watch images on the internet, if i can run this Patreon and post my drawings here is thanks to this beautiful woman, Lena Forsén (previously Soderberg, born Sjööblom), playmate of the month in november 1972 issue of Playboy. Her centerfold pic was cropped and become the standard test image for compression algorithm in the digital image processing field, where the pic is known as Lenna. (the second image of this post)
She was aware of this fact and she was also invited to the 50th annual conference of Image Science and Technology Society in 1997. Playboy also tried to do a legal action to prevent the misuse of its copyrighted photography, but then the action was stopped. Recently Lena told she wished to be better compensated for the use of her image and that the image now should go in retirement as she did.
Lena Forsen is unanimously known in the image processing field as "The first lady of the internet"
