What BakaSama said. Rimuru is in charge because he named his people and they respect strength and expect him to rule them, and monsters have that belief in survival of the fittest. That said, his goal is to be comfortable and enjoy life with his friends. To do that he goes to more effort than any normal person would, just to achieve his being able to have a good meal, as a basic example, which leads to more and more other things. Despite that, he really does delegate as much as possible....... The difference between this battle and when Rimuru "ate" the others he's eaten before, is that Geld was both resisting and about equal in strength with him. He couldn't win with the same Skills his people used for the reasons I said in the comment I made on the last episode (they were better at them than he was), so he would fail if he tried it on Geld. Then logic, in the form of Great Sage, failed. The only thing that was left was instinct, and his most instinctual, and therefore strongest, Skills were Predator and Regeneration. A predator beats a scavenger. Btw, the yellow smoke was Geld applying Corrosion (aka Rot) to Rimuru. In the end he couldn't succeed until Geld surrendered, because of being of equal strength.
