Naming creates a connection between the two people. Not that every named monster serves the one that named them, but it does foster closer bonds. Even if Rimuru is a slime, monsters recognize strength, especially if they've been defeated. The single most important thing to monsters is strength, and they often serve those stronger than them, especially if named by them. The main danger is just that you could drain yourself of too many magicules and can't recover them. Great Sage is one of the reasons he doesn't go too far. The other reasons are for later. Rimuru isn't getting much from the connection now, but the named ones are getting some skills, although there are a couple of disadvantages, too. All of these considerations are not always relevant. The naming is necessary, but the reason some of his followers are gaining some of his Skills is because Rimuru has a Skill that enables him to share his other Skills in a limited way. I don't think it's very conscious on his part, but the receiver has to be compatible with the new Skill. Examples are Body Double for Souei, and Shadow Walk for Souei, Gobta and Ranga........ The naming process does depend on the strength and intent of both the namer and the named. Rimuru has certain expectations, even if unconscious, and the named ones can use the power to direct it towards their ideals and goals, but it isn't completely conscious, either. It can influence the direction of the evolution. The best example so far is Gobta, who must not have been concerned so much about his appearance, but about other things. He did evolve into a hobgoblin, even if he doesn't look different. He's stronger, more intelligent, and longer-lived, just like the rest of them. Somewhere in the novels it says he (and his friends) are teens.
