Yeah, you guys described it well! Toph can only bend minerals like OF the earth. If you think about it, trees/plants are seeds that are planted *into* the earth, and plus they're living things No one knows about metal bending, bc Toph is the first person to ever invent it. So I'm thinking maybe they had a wood cell... just bc olden times? Lol. Not sure why they were so smug about it though. I think we'll just have to suspend our disbelief.

About Toph not bending the metal of the cell next to them, I like to think of it as she can only clearly “see” her surroundings through what she can bend ( earth/metal ). This was the same reason she was unable to defend Appa in the desert. So her vision was probably blurry in a way when they were in the wooden cell? Also, since metal-bending is still relatively new ( Toph invented it ) and requires a lot of skill to perform, it’s probably harder to bend metal she’s not in direct contact with or in close proximity to… She’s been bending regular earth her whole life so it’s easier for her to bend from long distances in comparison to metal bending. A lot of these concepts are made clearer and explained in The Legend of Korra, so it might help to watch it after ATLA is over!

I think combustion man may have played a part in the wooden cell, which is probably why they looked so smug lol

I think that Toph couldn’t bend the metal cell because the wood cell had also wood floor, so she had no contact with her element in any way; just like when she was trapped in the metal cage (when she discovered she could bend metal), she had no way of bending the earth surrounding her because she was actually surrounded by metal. I think is pretty much the same concept

i have a fun fact about this episode!! an original plan for zuko's character was to have a pet hawk that would constantly fight with momo. of course that didn't end up happening (it did make it all the way to the unaired pilot though!), but they used that idea here for hawky, all the way to having him fight with momo :) i'm excited for the next one, it's a super super strong episode

You have to keep in mind that Toph learned to bend from the original source which were the BLIND moles, this means she learned techniques even masters don't have since they do not learn this way which why she and Aand are probably the only ones to see through their earth bending. Remember that she couldn't even see through sand bending because it's a different form of Earth which means it takes special techniques to bend different forms of the elements which also means it takes time to master, it's not automatic just because you're a bender. Also lava is so hot I'm pretty sure any earth melts and if there is earth in there it is again a different form which means if she hasn't tried to bend it she won't know how to. Please keep this in mind for all bending so you don't get confused.
