I was going to try and sketch this stuff out but I realize I just am never going to have the time to do it, so I'm just going to tell you what I was going to have happen directly after everyone leaves the hotel after the police let them go.

Carol & Thomas leave in his car, obviously.  They're talking about something, but I honestly can't remember exactly what at the moment.  They're at a stoplight, still talking, when the light goes green, but when Thomas goes to accelerate the car just sits there.  He's obviously annoyed because it's very late and now they can't drive home, when a semi truck barrels through the intersection on the red.  They both realize that if they had been crossing the intersection at that moment at least one of them, probably Carol, but likely both of them since the car is so old, would be dead.  Since no one is around at that hour to hurry them along they just sit there stunned for a moment. Having that feeling of how quickly your life can just end without warning.  Once it wears off Thomas attempts to start the car & it's perfectly fine.

It would've fit nicely in the section right after the investigation, but before the narration started, but it would've added weeks to the story potentially.  At that point we'd been doing this for, two months? Three?  I'm not even sure.  Regardless I decided to cut it so we could just move one.  Feel free to consider this a canonical occurrence though.

I also considered having Alex seduce Reggie since she was all hyped up over his detective work, the discovery, and everything.  She would've asked him to come down to the library's bunker, offered him some of the whiskey from their adventure, & things would've taken their course.  But I decided not to go ahead with that because of the story dragging on, and not being sure if I wanted her to advance their relationship at this point.  I feel like it could've worked, but I usually go with things that feel right in the moment, & this didn't feel that way as strongly as something I would easily pull the trigger on.

I think canonically we can say that she gave him a kiss that was very passionate & very much caused by the emotional rollercoaster & all the hormones that sort of adventure causes.  For Reggie's part he didn't question it and just let the moment happen for a change.  And that sort of leads to him showing up with Alex at the next speaking part instead of John.  I did that specifically to infer a shift in the relationships.  Also there's enough chemistry with Patty that I threw her in the mix right then too.  Just so there could be sort of a love pentagon going on. Or whatever shape you get when however many people are interested in whatever number I'm up to...  5? 6?  I'm very tired right now. Love geometry is just a bit shaky at the moment.

Anyway I'm sorry I didn't draw this out but it would've more than I could handle in addition to the other things I need to get done and have pushed back for a couple of months.

Thanks for the details! I understand that you want to move on, but hearing what you were thinking to do was great as well. This was a fascinating story arc, always made me look forward to seeing the next day's strip.

Y'know, it literally took me until this latest archive dive (which is, uh, maybe the 8th such reread? It might be higher...) to realize the ghost in Thomas' car is benevolent and was warning them of the incoming cops, rather than your typical malevolent "hates all that lives" kind that was just messing with them. These details make that a lot more clear. Cool stuff! :D

I've actually been there, done that. Years ago when I was living in Orlando FL. I was driving an old MG B, and was stopped waiting to cross Mills Ave.

Alex

Excellent. I'm glad that you wrote this out.

I have to say that this has been one of the most interesting arcs you've written so far. Keep doing the good work :)
