Chibi art always comes out looking a bit odd when I try it, but maybe this isn't a total loss.

Normal Thomas smoochin with Chibi Carol

<i>"...maybe this isn't a total loss."</i> It isn't; but I don't think <i>chibi</i> works as effectively with characters who are already chubby. Now if you rendered <i>Jo</i> this way...

maybe it's because it's not totally Chibi ? It's half-way between Chibi and "realistic" so it's a bit strange but not bad at all !

Alternate title: shortstack Carol

One hint about Chibi from someone who's done it (and I had to spend a LONG time analyzing what made it look right...) A chibi character is about 1/3 the size of the normal character, with about half the size being head. Think of a Funko Pop doll. Hands and feet are rudimentary rather than defined (they often don't have fingers and toes). Those are sort of the basics. You would have to fine-tune the detail work.
