I haven't done one of these in a while, but enough has changed I thought I had better do one now so if things got worse you all wouldn't be totally shocked.  I talked about it on the discord server, but since so few of you migrated to it I was basically talking to 10 people, five of which are mods.

Anyway, readership for the comic is down by about 2000 people.  It has been for around 2 months.  I can't say why for sure, but it could be any number of things I've said or done, or just general malaise over a comic that has been running for over a decade.  Ad revenue is so minimal now that patreon is, essentially, the entire source of my income.  So, in case you've ever felt like your pledge didn't matter rest assured it does.  A bit over 700 people are making it possible for me to continue Between Failures, and there's no way to thank you in any way that approximates your value to me for allowing me to continue telling my story.

It's very depressing to lose such a huge number of readers, but if 700 people are the only ones in the world who want it then that's how many I'll make it for.  I'm kind of a relic from a time on the internet that no longer exists.  There are so many talented artists and writers who have training I lack that I'm always lagging farther and farther behind.

So, to sum all this up, thank you for keeping the lights on, so to speak.  Even with my extensive vocabularly I lack the words to thank you all properly.

XOXO

J.T.

I really appreciate you keeping it up. I know it's gotta be hard, and if you had to quit I'd of course understand, but I'm glad you're keeping it up. I've been reading for about... 9 years, and in that time your comic has helped a lot. I know it seems small, but you're doing good things, even if you're not getting the appreciation you should for it. I wish I could pledge more to you, and I hope soonish I can, but I really appreciate what you do. More than I could pay you for.

Cave

been a reader since you switched to color, as long as you got a story to tell, i'll be here to read and support it

If you keep making, I'll keep supporting.

I've not been reading as long but I can say I agree with these sentiments 100%. No matter how many other comics I read I still have my favorites that I always go back to read and reread over and over, and Between failures is one of them.

Arc

Been reading for over 6 years. Yours is the longest ive ever read a comic. Thank you for making it!

Happy to support this comic and you! Always enjoy your stories. Just upped my pledge a couple of bucks :)

Best money I spend monthly

Not going anywhere. We're all in between failures somehow. :)

Just wanted to say that I finally made up my mind last week and started to support you (and some other webcomics) on Patreon. I hope that helps a little. I've read BF since late 2011/early 2012, somewhere around comic 1200 I think. Found it through google reader (R.I.P), the by far best RSS reader I've ever used. Still mostly reads it on feedly via RSS but often go to the site to check for comments.

It is noticeable on TebWebComics too. BF once was in the top 10 of "real-life" comics. Not so long ago it was in the top 100 webcomics and now it barely is in the top 200. If think this is as much a cause as a consequence of the loss of readers. I vote every week day and I'm not the only one but it is really hard raising it higher

Mark

I keep forgetting to vote on TWC unless the creator prompts me (I've done it for BF today). Also there are some great comics, e.g. Gunnerkrigg Court and Questionable Content, almost as far down the list, but I don't get the impression that either Tom Siddell or Jeph Jacques care all that much.

Ardent Slacker

I started to type something positive about this series, but then realized... this is the patron section, and, like, I'm already saying that by a couple bucks a month. ^^; I can't have any insight about people who have wandered off. ^^;

Just so you know, I found your comic pretty late in the game from an old QC shout-out and I read the whole backlog. I related to your story in ways that I never could with any other comic I’ve read. Sure, it’s a great time for webcomics, but you are irreplaceable.

You're still one of only two internet creators (comics or otherwise) that have earned my trust and respect enough for me to support. I raised my pledge from $1 to $2. I know it's not much, but it's what I can pay for your work, and I'm glad to pay it.

Bill Saunders

I’ve been reading your work since the days it was rendered in black & white. As a novelist, I have enjoyed the stories you have created and loved how each character has evolved along the way. Seeing relationships bloom, Jo come out of her shell, Reggie gain complexity — I could go on. Jackie, you’ve created a wonderful world here and it’s been my pleasure to tag along all these years. Good work, sir. Damn good work!

I bet lots of us remaining readers are similar relics from the pre-hashtag internet. I suppose I spent my formative years on forums because it offered me the chance to be myself when I couldn't in real life; but much of the internet has shifted away from that anonymity, for better or for worse. Maybe you're not the best artist making comics online, but you've certainly developed your skills over time to become solidly good. Regardless, I read and support the comic for your characters and stories, which deserve to be seen.

Churchill (formerly TeaBear)

I introduce everyone I can to this comic, if they seem at all interested. I raised my support last year, and if I could I'd raise it more. I can't even recall exactly when I started reading (sometime before the Great Nerf Battle, I'm sure), but I am happy to be a reader and proud to support your story.

We're not going anywhere :)

maninblack

That kind of sucks to hear that, but know I'm not going anywhere anytime soon and quite enjoy your comic

Barbarian Badger

As long as I can support you man I will. Your comic resonates with me.

Anonymous

Agreed. I'm in for the long haul.

Wish I could afford to give more :(

Scott Brown

Not going anywhere if I can help it :)

You're stuck with us. If nothing else you could always do up a visual novel or the like to drum up some more support. Actually, if you're interested contact me, I'm already working on one and have enough freetime to make another.

I'd forgotten Patreon was linked to the bank account I closed a while back. Been so overworked I didn't notice until now, sorry about that.
