Crafting Material, Rare

In the deep, labyrinthine sand caves wrought by the fearsome blue dragons, an ever-present torrent of mystical electricity yields a wondrous effect. The scorching heat generated by the rampant discharges transmutes select grains of sand into glittering crystals of purest glass, suffused with the very magic that wrought them into being. These crystals are known as Elodium Glass.

Although fragile, they are highly potent and can be used to empower weapons and magical artifacts with the power of lightning. The problem is how to get your hands on one of these.

While the blue dragons are in their lair, they can feel the electricity emanating from each of these crystals and would immediately know if any of them were taken. Also, blue dragons habitually collapse their caves if they think defeat is a possibility. In that case, the crystals are lost below ground and rarely brought to the surface after a sandstorm.

Proficiency Needed

To craft something using these electric crystals as a font of power, you must have proficiency in Jeweler's Tools. Some crafters have tried to use Glassblowers Tools to mold the crystal into differently shaped items, but I wouldn't recommend it.

The electric power inside an Ellodium Crystal is volatile and can release intense lightning bursts if mishandled. You may need to use your Arcana knowledge to understand how the crystal's energy flows. If somehow you make something wrong, you'll need to succeed on a DC15 Dexterity saving throw to get away before suffering 10d6 lightning damage. Taking only half the damage in a successful save. If you are touching the crystal with your bare skin or with a metallic instrument, you make the test with disadvantage. After this discharge, the crystal loses its magical properties becoming just a pile of mundane broken glass.

Know uses

Elodium is a small crystal with considerable power potential. That makes it an incredible power source for larger items like electrified weapons and even defensive structures like fences and gates. It also can be shaped into glass weapons with huge destructive potential, but those weapons end up being fragile in comparison with metals and stones, and of course, dangerous.

I used Elodium Glass as fuel to craft the Twinvolt Daggers, a pair of small blades with shocking power when used together.
