I just had a rather interesting conversation with Xaljio. He brought my attention to how blend the buttons look in the game. Me, I don't even pay attention to those freaking things anymore. Don't even notice them. They get the job done - that's all I need. But on the early stages I did plan to do that so I put together this quick mock up for you. Now the question: should I bother with them? ====> Poll: http://strawpoll.me/2770719

I will admit that the new buttons look really good, and would be an excellent addition. But, I would not upgrade with them if it will cause a serious issue (massive time outlay, having to alter choices/background to fit.) And I will also note, that the old ones are somewhat transparent, while the new ones obscure more of the background art. Might become an issue as well.

Vargh

Just because I like graphics and hate default crappy "programmer graphics" I vote for the new ones :)

Depends how much additional time this will need to be added. Also, will these new buttons apply to everything?

FeyOne

I said that 'default are fine'... however, the custom ones DO look better. Really, it's a question of time for you. If it's a relatively minor change for you to do, it definitely adds to the feel and should be done. But if it's a big deal, then don't do it.

I say stick with what's already there, and to save this thought for whatever future project you decide to take up.

Oric13

If it's a lot of work then don't bother, but if you can implement that button look with a few hours work then please do so because it does look a lot better.

Anonymous

If you have a fixed deadline and you have to spend additional time on creating these, don't bother, they're fine. If not and it won't take much time and effort - they're an improvement definitely.

BearPerson

I'd say default is fine and functional, custom looks better. Perhaps leave the default for the initial release, and add the custom buttons later in an updated version?

UT62

Custom buttons look great but seems to be a bit too big and don't really make place for as much options as with the default buttons. Also it's just aesthetic it doesn't add anything to the gameplay and it's maybe a risk to bring up bugs in the game and loose more time to the release we are all impatiently waiting for. Maybe in Princess Trainer Gold or in an update of HT if there is one, when you'll have more time to invest to the aesthetic aspect.

I like the size of the original one better, but I think having colorful icons associated with the choices make them easier to identify at a glance and adds some flair to it. I dont know if I like the scroll effect though. It adds visual clutter without adding anything.

Anonymous

And maybe if the icons were smaller and more stylized and simpler.

akabur

Noted, noted. Those big-ass buttons are just a mock-up. If needs be I could create come cool and fitting ones. Problem is the time...

A the question of polish and productivity. The buttons make the game seem more polished, but as others have said, are not necessary. You are talking to a rabid fan base who are dying to get their hands on the game, so I would guess the "leave buttons as-is will win out." I do feel that polish is important for quality work. Little improvements like this make the game just feel "better" overall. Yet, as I work on my own game, I know just how freakin' time consuming adding polish can be. So, I would say it is up to YOU. How do you envision your released product? If you feel the buttons would leave you more satisfied with the HT, then add them. I'm sure I will love the game either way, and will (im)patiently wait to play it!

Tbh, the custom buttons look a bit clunky. Would it really be worth the effort for a bunch of clunky buttons that don't really provide anything? Best to spend that time on making the game more awesome.

Anonymous

I do like the the extra images with the buttons I think you shouldn't go with them if it gives you an extra job

Anonymous

Whichever seems fine, although personally I'd prefer anything smaller over the big intruding ones.

Anonymous

I think no one would argue that the ucustom buttons look better. But people are going to vote for the default one because they're afraid the custom buttons will delay the game.

Anonymous

My opinion is stick with the "default" buttons. They worked in Princess Trainer and I'm of the mind if you consider doing this put it on the very bottom of your mountain of a to-do list. Awesome of you to ask for our input.

Anonymous

I like the new buttons. They make the game feel like its own project and not a sequel to princess trainer or magic shop. As for the time issue I am sure we can all wait just a little longer till you think the game is perfect. Though a earlier release with the original buttons and an update with the new buttons is a good idea.

I like the default buttons better, precisely because their style is so manifestly apart from the rest of the game. It feels like they are over-imposed, something which shouldn't be there but is there nonetheless, something which doesnt' fit completely in the story but has the power to change the course of events... An external tyrannical force, an interested intromission, exactly our role as players in the game. I like that.

Dorago

Personaly, I like the one on the right :)

silvarius2000

I vote that you keep this as an upgrade when you do the gold edition. Maybe on princess trainer first ?

akabur

Yeah, I know. But you guys voted against it. So I will leave the buttons be for now.

akabur

I like the way you think. And agree with you. Plus you guys voted against it. I will leave the default buttons be as they are.

akabur

Yes. And since that's what you guys voted for anyways - will be releasing the game with the default buttons.

akabur

Well if I DID WNAT the new buttons I would make them anyways and no one would be able to stop me. Honestly I don't mind the default buttons and since the majority seem to share my opinion I will leave them be. At least for now.

akabur

That's just a mock-up and I decided to stick with the default ones for now. Yeah. I have plenty of other things things on my "to-do-list" before release so i will be taking care of those instead.

akabur

Yeah, I know :) And to be honest I would not even ask you guys if I felt that those new buttons is a must. And I am glad that you voted against them. I will leave the default once in place for now.

akabur

True, true. I think I could always upgrade something like this with a "DLC" if needs be.

I really like how the custom buttons look, but at the same time it looks like a lot of work and I'd rather have the game sooner or with more content =P maybe next game?
