The ancient alchemist doesn't have a jar the experienced hunting team can put a mushroom in? Why would they need a teenaged formation novice to come along?

It'll be developed in more detail as they get closer to actually going for it, but the requirement is that formations be applied in the field in order to pick the mushrooms without destroying them. They can be prepped somewhat, but it requires someone with a decent eye to deploy everything correctly. If it's jarring I'll take a look at getting the explanation into the narrative.

I know there's subtext, but imo it's not clear enough how essential Jian's hack was for preserving the lotus.
