This is an overdue critique of some of the most beloved episodes of Legend of Korra — which I don't like. Let's discuss blue and orange morality, the role of mystery in worldbuilding, and context in which these episodes are written and... why that makes them more difficult to swallow for me.

I am however really interested to know what YOU think of Beginnings after watching this video. Please do let me know down below or (more easily) over on the Discord in the #avatar channel. This is a very particular angle for me to come at these episodes from, and I want to know how you all see it.

Yes! I hadn't put my finger on how exactly this part of the story bothered me aside from giant chest lasers solving all problems, but that's it... Wan should have had both Raava and Vaatu merge with him if the avatar's existence was to be explained in that way, and retain them theme of balance being important that was established so well in ATLA. Thanks, Tim.

First off, I would like to say as always you have very well done videos, Tim. It was a good break down on the way the 2nd season dropped the ball. Around the point that morality of war comes into play, it reminded me of the Fire Emblem Franchise. One of the basic principles of Fire Emblem is the fact that both sides have good people. An example of this is the FE archetype of Camus. These characters can be considered the best of the best of their nation. They have loving family members and a high moral code. Yet they are fighting for the bad guys. They know what their nation is doing is evil or wrong, yet the morals will not let them betray their lord. This has made many fans of the series cry over their loss. Then there rules of the Hardin archetype. Rules who were once kind and caring but turned cold and heartless. They are people that at one time had personal relationships with the main lords of the series or Camus characters. Some Rudolf can be great examples. They are characters that are war-driven and are known as conquerors. However, their motivations for war can be as simple as trying to make the world a better place or even save it. Most of the series deals with the issue of morality in war. Even more so for FE was once known for the default mode that dealt with permadeath. This was hard for it forced the player to think carefully. If not they could lose character especially one they came to love through the story and the support conversation characters had with each other. This could ruin the end game if they lost too many characters. It also caused most of the soft resets on more than a few game boys. I just thought the connection was interesting since FE always showed that you couldn't stay neutral in wars. No matter how much the choice hurt, looking at you Three Houses!
