My fellow bassists,

One of the things that separates the pros from the rest, when it comes to slap, is their ability to mute unnecessary string noise.

It's so important to master this ability if you want your bass lines to sound clear and punchy, and it's often overlooked because people aren't sure how to practise it.

Luckily, I've simplified it into four main muting methods that you can start using today!

1. Right-Hand Mutes - where you rest the base of your thumb on the string to dampen it

2. Left-Hand Mutes - where you rest the fingers of your left hand over all the strings so you can play ghost notes

3. Lifted Mutes - where you lift your left finger up off the fretboard but not off the string, so that the strings stops ringing and dampens

4. Left-Thumb Mutes - where you wrap your left thumb around the neck of the bass and use it to mute the E string.

Practise the exercise below and make sure to use each of these muting methods as indicated in the tabs. If you can master this exercise, your muting abilities will improve dramatically!

Thanks so much for your support, have an amazing day and I'll see you in the next lesson!

Charles
