My fellow bassists,

I've been seeing a lot of comments asking for some tips / exercises on strumming, so here's an exercise for you! There's a few tips at the beginning too.

This exercise will help you to practise the most common types of strumming, including single strums, double strums, strums in slap bass lines and open-string strummed melodies.

As always, let me know if you have any questions about this and I'll make sure to get back to you ASAP! Also, I haven't forgotten about the winner of this month's poll which was using music theory to create bass lines / solos, but I've been traveling recently and haven't had the time to do it justice. Hopefully I can get that done for you in the next couple of weeks!

Thanks for coming here and practising with me, have a great day and I'll see you in the next lesson!

Charles

I’m having some trouble with the 16th strum on that back stroke. It’s still just ring and middle fingers, yeah? Fingertips graze past the strings? On the 8ths it’s way easier to do Ring Thumb, like Flamenco guitar. Yoooooo, have you seen Rob Scallon’s Flamenco Bass technique?! Dude, I love that. Wanna learn to slap like that so bad. https://youtu.be/wm4kAFYyUjw?si=OU0zG37Gxb7MyZ7-

On the way back I usually use just my middle finger. And for quick triplet strums, on the way back I usually do up-thumb, index, middle. Whatever gets you a controlled sound and allows you to play fast!

Charles, another member just shared your Silver Play Button video with me. WHAT?! You covered Gerudo Valley?! Yooooooo, I need tabs for that!!! Can you put Song Arrangements on July's list of "What we want to learn" and have a poll offering a a selection of songs if Song Arrangements wins?

Charles, when I practice the exercise I want to strum the 1 and 2 string but I always also strum 3 string carelessly, please tell me how to solve it.

Try strumming just the G string for a while. Position your hand lower and make your movements a bit smaller. If you can strum just the G string, then you can try adding in the D string
