My fellow bassists,

In the comments for my latest video, I saw A LOT of you wanting a full tutorial of U Can't Hold No Groove by Victor Wooten, so here it is!

This is a pretty tough bass line - it involves a lot of more advanced techniques like strumming, quick taps, double-pops and more. If you're finding it too challenging, I made a simplified version of the main theme which you can find here.

Mastering this bass line will give you huge improvements in your strumming, tapping while slapping and general feel! I haven't really seen any accurate tutorials for this online so I hope that this one helps you out!

Thanks for coming here and learning with me, let me know if you have any questions or comments at all and I'll see you in the next video!

Charles

PS - since Victor created official tabs for this, I'd rather not post the full tabs here but instead direct you here: https://www.halleonard.com/product/2500317/the-best-of-victor-wooten

You can even download just this song if you'd rather not pay for the whole book!

This is outstanding! I "learned" this song years ago, but I could never make it sound as smooth as I wanted it to be. The strumming thing is what I was missing. Thank you!

Finally, a song that always seemed too confusing (the multiple slap/taps with the left hand) finally made accessible. Thanks! I know there are a lot of tutorials on it out there, but would you consider doing a Berthoud-style "Tommy The Cat"? I have the official tab book, but not even that seems to capture the actual essence of the song...

Charles Berthoud

If I remember correctly, Victor doesn't indicate the strumming in his tab book... Maybe I'm wrong but I initially learned this song from the book and I never did any strumming. It makes a huge difference!

Charles Berthoud

Glad this lesson helped! And yeah Tommy The Cat could be interesting, or Les Claypool material in general...
