My fellow bassists,

While we were in Reunion, we gave some masterclasses at a few different music colleges and studios around the island. We took lots of questions but at one point I also gave Bernth a slap lesson! This was a really fun moment, and as you can see Bernth is not particularly experienced with slap (especially compared to his incredible overall guitar technique!).

So I thought this would be a great way to introduce a few short slap exercises that will help you improve your technique! These are all exercises that I've practised myself for years and I can say from experience that they work wonders!

As always, let me know if you have any questions at all and I'll make sure to respond ASAP. Thanks for coming here and learning with me, have a great day and I'll see you in the next lesson!

Charles

Charles, I had my bass setup at a music store. I can only get the strings to slap when open. if fretted they do nothing. What height do they need to be set at?

Charles Berthoud

When you say "do nothing" do you mean that they don't make a sound at all? If that's the case, it sounds like the strings are way too close to the fretboard, meaning that they can't resonate at all and therefore can't produce sound
