Behind the Scenes: Someday My Prince Will Come (Patreon)

Hi everyone!

I hope you guys enjoyed the recent Valentine's Day comic! I hadn't realized how much fun it would be getting into it, but the shorter format has certainly made it easier to get work out there in a faster turnaround - that should've been pretty obvious, but the truth was that I hadn't actually intended to make anything specific for the occasion! During this time, I was still figuring out the groundwork for my next unannounced project... But then I was like, FUCK IT! WE'RE DOING IT LIVE!

The new project shifts the spotlight on Pridestar as the protagonist. It seemed rather fitting and ironic that Valentine's Day would actually be the perfect time to launch the new monthly series of Meatier Showers comic strips.

With that said, we pretty much hit the ground running, scrambling to piece together some sort of setup, build up and punchline...

In the original draft above, the first panel sets up Pridestar as some sort of "love guru" - all composed, refined and classy. The following panels we see him creep up towards Snares from behind, only to realize how smol he is in comparison to his love interest. This might've seemed fine and all at first, but as I was extrapolating the thumbnails into actual panels, the punchline turned out to be really lackluster. It also didn't make sense to suddenly "deform" Pridestar into an anime chibi form which isn't very on-brand with the rest of the comic series. After some brainstorming, I kept the second panel (and made it the setup) and kept the intent of the punchline (where Pridestar brings Snares flowers)...

Funny comics generally work if you have at least end with a funny image, have high energy or some kind of unexpected twist. The best ones usually have all 3. Taking all that to consideration, I went ahead with the revisions and here's the cleaned up version:
