Have been waiting for this, thank you! Glad you were able to get the extended for this one. I agree with most that this trilogy is not on the level of LOTR, but I still love this world they created and enjoy watching anything that takes place there.

Martin Robertson

Can't believe I'm saying this but I actually think I prefer Legolas in the Hobbit myself. Just because Orlando Bloom's had 10 years by this point to develop his acting chops.

Ruhutta

I don't get the people in the lotr community that are divided between the movies... why the hate for the hobbit? I am a lifetime long fan of lotr and loved the hobbit movies, maybe not quite as much as lotr but nearly.

Anonymous

Haven’t fully finished watching this one but if you still crave more Middle-earth I think it’d be amazing if you reacted to Amazon’s Rings of Power series next! The opinions about the quality of the show change based on who you ask (I personally love it) but I still think you would enjoy watching and reacting to it. Thank you for these reactions by the way I am a big fan of how you balance paying attention and also giving a genuine reaction.

jxm82

I cant speak for anyone but me but it just didnt feel like it needed three movies.

gak9319

I don't hate the Hobbit movies, but I definitely prefer LOTR🙂

Martin Robertson

And Tauriel could have been SO much better as a character, if they hadn't wrapped her up in that f***ing stupid and pointless love triangle.

Kage Uzumaki

No it was terrible I tried giving it a chance but the political agenda and weird talk about having people of color being represented was ridiculous I'm not even caucasian and I enjoyed shows without needing to be represented. Also tolkien was called racist by the creators of this series and stated they wanted to fix it so no. I can respect a person liking what I don't like but once someone comes with an agenda like that I personally can not be invested.

Sam

If you guys want to keep exploring this world, apart from reading the books (which are great reads btw), there are many great YouTube channels covering Tolkiens work such as Nerd of the Rings, Tolkien Untangled, In Deep Geek to name a few. 🙂

Jakob Schaefer

A lot of it comes from straying MAJORLY from the book. For example, there was no Azoc. Completely pulled from nowhere and somehow the focal point of the movies. It's overly hated for sure, but there is definitely validity in the hate.

Ruhutta

Here is a good link that shows all the extended scenes, honestly I'm glad you guys were able to watch it because of any Tolkien movie I think this one you NEED to watch the extended cut. Great reaction guys, loved it! https://www.reddit.com/r/TheHobbit/comments/3qhhol/detailed_list_of_new_shots_and_scenes_in_botfa/

Ruhutta

I don't agree honestly, there was plenty Peter did with the LOTR that was different from the books aswell. I don't agree with the hate, but to each their own.

Jakob Schaefer

The only real difference I can spot (aside from leaving some stuff OUT for times sake such as Tom Bombadil and the barrow downs) Is the exaggeration of Aragorn and Arwynn's romance. Other than that, What was really different? A few tweaks here and there I suppose, But i'm not sure I'm picking up what you're putting down. It's one thing to leave stuff out, but to ADD for the sake of a "trilogy" rubs people the wrong way. It takes like 10x the time to read LOTR as it does to watch the movies. It takes like 1/3rd of the time to read the hobbit vs watching.

Kate

I almost died at Pudgey's drumroll at the beginning. 🤣 I really enjoyed watching these with your reactions. I’m glad you can enjoy them more than I do, and I’m sure your reactions would be gratifying to the people who put so much work into The Hobbit, only for people like me to grumble about it. 😅 At the risk of sounding like a broken record: a lot of your questions, and so much more, can be answered by watching the special features. You’ll get more of that connection to the world that you want. I just learned, though, that the 4K LotR doesn’t include the special features. Holy shit. Get thee to a DVD/Blu-ray version! They’re worth it for the special features alone—even longer than the movies! And I might enjoy The Hobbit special features more than the movies themselves. I’m still surprised by Spartan’s perception of these films as being better looking. Does it have something to do with The Hobbit being shot digitally vs. on film, I wonder? To me, the slightly softer, grittier, and dreamier quality of film (also true of the colour grading in LotR compared with The Hobbit) suits the world better. You’re probably more used to the modern look of digital (sharper, polished, hyperreal), but it sort of clashes with the high fantasy setting for me, and seeing them for the first time in 48 fps was a total disaster. Also, it's just Bard, not the Bard. He's not a bard--it's just his name. 🙂

MrMoleHole

I think there are plenty of valid reasons not to like The Hobbit films, for example, it strayed too much from the spirit of the book, was too long, hardly any development for the dwarves, Thorin Fili and Kili not looking like dwarves, Bilbo being sidelined, lack of practical effects etc.

JIM SCHMITZ

Great time on this journey with you. As I commented earlier, I think the points that cause contention were a product of studio interference and the loss of the original director, which made Jackson scramble to get them done in a reasonable time. Several extra-Hobbit elements, like Azog and the White Council, were drawn from appendices that Tolkien also wrote for LOTR. Btw, your looks of surprise are priceless.

Jason Serrano

Magic rings are a thing in middle-earth but they are quite rare. Even tho Gandalf new Bilbo is using a ring. He didn't know yet that it was THE ONE RING that Sauron made.

Thomas Jefferson Reyes

Lord Elrond + Uncorrupted and very agile Saruman + Super Saiyan Galadriel vs Nazgul and ringless Sauron was my favorite

Eli Sullivan

Great Reaction. Its interesting to think that about how Tolkien wrote The Hobbit first, and Lord of the Rings after which is obviously the inverse of how they were released on film. The Lord of the Rings is truly a sequel to The Hobbit which a lot of people look at the Hobbit being a prequal. When thinking about the overall Narrative as it moves from so many races fighting massive wars and levels of high fantasy like dragons, to the idea of Man finally stepping up from a place of weakness to face evil and lead the world into a new age, it really does work. Also, imagine what the book readers thought after massive characters actually died in The Hobbit, and then Gandalf fell in the Fellowship of the Ring...

gak9319

Bombur is not Gimli's father, that would be Gloin😂

SuddenImpulse

Look up what happened TO Peter Jackson and how badly he was treated with the Hobbit trilogy. That explains a lot of it. The time, care, and various elements that were what made the LotR trilogy so special and stand the test of time, a lot of that just didn't happen or was shortcut during the production of these films. Then there were criticisms about some aspects of the CGI implementation etc. Some dislike that they stretched a 300 page childrens book into 3 lengthy movies and also changed a lot of it (in ways that generally were less well received than the changes made to the main trilogy, at least as far as long term reception). For me personally, I liked the third movie pretty good (outside certain aspects/parts of it, which are probably the same ones a lot of people dislike), whereas I don't care as much for the first 2 for a few reasons, and I think they probably could've been shortened or made better use of their length, additionally. There are plenty of articles about it online that have much more in-depth explanation with much better references and sourcing than you will find here, if you are really curious. Personally, I don't dislike them, I just think they are mediocre movies (by general movie standards) and by LotR-specific movie standards, well, it has some pretty stiff competition so that doesn't help when comparing. That said, while I personally would've preferred they had reacted to other films than the Hobbit ones, I don't mind that they did, and I am watching all 3 reactions to them. If people like or even love these Hobbit movies, fine by me. Personal taste and preference thing.

Sam

Jakob Schaefer Azog was a real Tolkien character. In fact he did kill Thror in the battle at Moria, but he died before the story of the Hobbit. Bolg is also a real character, in fact he is Azog's son. So the characters are real, but the films gave them new stories.

I fully agree with Patrik here. I think they would really like it

I subbed to your patreon when you began GoT so I could watch uncut reactions, and for the past year you guys have been in my life as a weekly source of entertainment and I've loved being able to re-experience my favourite show through your eyes. Top it all off with the 6 middle-earth films and its been worth every penny. I know I'll resubscribe in the future someday to watch your uncut reactions to them all over again, but for now I've gotta thank you guys for the passion and effort you put in.

i feel the hobbit battle scenes requiring special effects make it more cartoonish. However, the choreography of fluid supernatural fighting skills by elves makes sense, and the bit more comical side of the dwarven company also makes more sense, but overall i prefer battle scenes with little special effects as it feels believable and raw like you say.

Anonymous

Gandalf is weaker cause he's only Gandalf the Gray. When he returns he is "Saruman", as he should have been. The fight scene with the ringwraiths is amazing. And I think the reference to fixing the staff is cause Gandalf does fiddle about with it in Fellowship. Galadriel shows a bit of that power in Fellowship when she resists the ring. If she took the ring she would become more powerful than Sauron and take full control of Middle Earth.

Having Billy Connolly act as Dain is genius.

Great reaction! Honestly my favourite scene in all of the movies is Galadriel absolutely destroying that orc & going all demon mode to banish sauron haha. It truly displays the power of the ring of nenya that she wears and all of her power. Everytime you watch LOTR again you will understand more and more. I've watched it over 15 times and never get enough of it. Legolas isn't in The Hobbit books at all, nor is Tauriel, their entire invention was fiction, alongside the dwarf/elf romance. That is usually most folks complaints with the movies as they do add a touch of 'hollywood cliche' to amazing stories that don't need to be altered. Not to mention: Although a 'kool moment' jumping over a shield blockade is the most illogical move lol!

Anonymous

Would love to see you all react to some of the Nerd of the Rings videos about the history of the characters and places. He does a great job putting a lot of info into succinct videos. He has great videos about the origins of the dwarves, elves, hobbits as well as some of the main characters like the members of the fellowship, the wizards, Sauron and Gollum etc.

Elora D. Dragneel

Gandalf trying to fix the staff & Alfrid's death is a scene only in the extended edition, it's very silly indeed lol

Jasmin

In a deleted scene it is mentioned that the heirlooms Thranduil wants back were his wife’s. That’s why he is so emotionally attached to these stones. It’s not for the sake of being rich, it’s for the sake of his deceased wife. That adds another layer to Thranduils personality.

Anonymous

Great reaction guys I can’t wait for war of the rohirrim next year

Anonymous

You need to watch Billy Boyd (Pippin) singing The Last Goodbye from the credits of the movie! It shows clips from The Hobbit AND Lord of the Rings and its such a nice song to encompass both journeys into one emotional moment.

Ebony

amazing movie

Anonymous

The scene with Galadriel, Elrond, and Saruman has got to be one of my favourites in the whole series. Seeing Galadriel's unrelent power, with Saruman and Elrond taking out the Nazgul still gives me goosebumps.

So sad that Balin died in Moria :'(

Stryder Garvey

Bombur the biggest dwarf who you’re referring to as gimlis dad is not his dad it’s Gloin the other red headed dwarf

Anonymous

Amazing Movie. Haters were wrong with GoT, hey were wrong with this Story as well. Part 1 was great. Part 3 amazing. Only Part 2 was only okay.

Anonymous

Balin, the oldest dwarve with white hair is the man in the tomb they find in the LOTR Fellowship of the Ring in Moria where they have the battle Scene. Also, the dead dwarve holding the book Gandalf finds and reads is Ori, who is also one of the dwarves of Thorin's company. Between the Hobbit and LOTR movies, Balin led an expedition to reclaim Moria, which ultimately failed. It is also the reason why Gimli expected to meet dwarves in Moria, though news of their death hadn't reached anyone yet. One of the many tiny details that ties in the two movies which aren't explained

Anonymous

Thranduil was always in the right....it was the dwarves and their greed that caused strife among the elves and the dwarves.

Anonymous

btw Alfrid was pointless and a complete waste of screen time

Anonymous

Kili wasnt good enough a fighter.,.,Aragorn and Legolas alone would have destroyed these orcs. Tuariel of course was a made up character that just didnt do it for me. But the movie was entertaining.

Anonymous

Legolas seems top dog here because he would be. Aragorn is the top dog no matter who is around. But Viggo was the man because he didnt want to show up for the Hobbit because he was not part of it. Legolas was not either. Yes they were living at the time but not part of it in the books. Having said that the movies were good just not LOTR level good.

Darth Sckolar

Really? You think reducing Galadriel to an arrogant, loveless, action hero does her justice in comparison to the Galadriel that we see in the movies? Tasteless.
