The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (THEATRICAL EDITION) | UNCUT Reaction

*We couldn't source the Extended edition for this one, so we had to watch the theatrical*

Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

  • Use a dual monitor PC setup to watch both screens simultaneously
  • Use the split screen functions on your computer/phone to watch them side by side
  • Chromecast / Screenshare one screen to your TV while watching the other screen on a phone or laptop
  • HDMI your laptop / tablet to the TV and use the TV as a 2nd monitor (not mirror display)
  • Use your Smart TV or Gaming console to play the YouTube reaction and your Phone/Laptop to play the show (or other way around)
  • Use Google chromes picture in picture mode to overlay your own copy of the show over our reaction in a smaller window size (Link to the extension here: ( https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en )

We hope you enjoy the video!

Alex

broo max has the extended edition just use a vpn.

imperial

Yesssss thank you! Have been refreshing my Patreon feed constantly for something good to watch and then my favorite channel finally pops up with a new one 😁

Stryder Garvey

Oh so many good scenes in the extended edition 😱 you guys should do separate reactions to just the extended scenes on YouTube for these movies. I think that would be a way to get the lore from them without watching the full movie again.

Andrew Roach

Strange you can't find extended in your location. Not finding the extended for the third will omit some key scenes, though not on the level of Return of the King where the theatrical version never featured Sauroman, yeah... really.

I’m soooooo behind on all your reactions. I’ve been having a rough time, but I have a four day weekend coming up, and can binge your reactions!!

spartanandpudgey

Hang in there Amber, we hope things start looking up. Enjoy your 4 day weekend! relax, unwind and de-stress :D

imperial

I feel ya, being able to binge their reactions is the best thing though, it’s why I joined the Patreon lol.

If you love the music, be sure to check out the songs that play during the ending credits of each movie, Lord of the Rings included. The song at the end of the 3rd Hobbit is The Last Goodbye sung by Billy Boyd, who played Pippin in LOTR, who also sang a song in the 3rd LOTR movie, if you recall.

Joseph Schiller

Benedict Cumberbatch did such a good job voicing and mo caping Smaug

Looking forward to the next movie reaction. The physical version of Sauron that was depicted in this movie is canonically a more accurate portrayal of the dark lord. In the LOTR movies he is portrayed as a burning eye, but that is merely symbolism concocted by Peter Jackson to appeal more to viewers. Sauron is a spirit that has a physical form in LOTR, but he is hiding within his tower of Barad-Dur. In the books, the lidless eye is merely a symbol of Sauron's will to dominate Middle-earth. As for Sauron's former master Melkor/Morgoth, he was sent into the timeless void almost 2960 years before the Hobbit.

John Neiberger

I second this. They need to listen to the closing credits songs of all the Hobbit movies and then go back and listen to the closing credits of Return of the King, too.

Sam

"sounds like Ed Sheeran". It is :) If you haven't heard it yet, the song is called I See Fire :)

def want to watch the extended edition for the last movie gives alot more backstory to the elf dwarf conflict and the battle scene is more epic but thanks for the hard work

Martin Robertson

And the actor whose face looks familiar to you is a Welshman named Luke Evans. He was in Dracula Untold and that PITIFUL excuse for a remake of Beauty and the Beast.

Kevin Bandy

lol it IS Ed Sheeran

Jon

nice reaction, as always :) ... but seriously guys, it's a fuck*ng DRAG to find the theatrical edition (France)... so I did the extended, and I poorly manage like this... - really try to find the extended edition for the last one... also, there a really big difference with many addition scenes in this one

Anonymous

While I understand that it's difficult to find the Extended Editions I am a little sad about it. You are right that they are not essential to understand the movies but there still are a few scenes that I love and think add to the experience if you love the worldbuilding (for example in this one: more Beorn scenes, and more with Gandalfs side plot). You should definitely try to watch the Extended Version for the last one, if it is possible. I enjoyed your LotR Eextended reactions so much. You are the best reactors out there.

Anonymous

Really enjoyed watching with you guys, it actually made me realise the movie is a lot better than people say if you take away what you know from the books the added bits are OK. Its a shame they split these up so much I feel they could have been two really great big movies. Btw yes thats Ed Sheeran hahaha, it sorta sounds like him, because it is! In the LOTR lore Dragons have always craved treasure. The “father of dragons,” Glaurung, sacked Nargothrond and gathered all the gold & jewels into a mound to sleep on. That was back in the First Age, so it's just an instinct/ desire they have. In later eras, the Dwarves accumulated substantial wealth that attracted dragons, such as Smaug. Dwarves are one of the only races that know how to fight dragons because of their incredible Dwarven Helmets which resist their fire (somewhat)!

Please watch the Extended edition for the last movie, The Battle of the Five Armies. For the first two Hobbit movies it's not really important (especially since the last movie shorter than the other two), but defs for the last one. I sourced my version of the extended edition from Apple TV movies (bonus is you can just rent it for your reaction).

Anonymous

Hey guys I'm also from aus and I'm watching this on prime and its got the extended editions if u guys did wanna watch those but it really doesn't matter. Keep up the great work, been a joy to come back and watch these with a fresh perspective

MrMoleHole

Enjoyed the reaction! honestly not a fan of this film, I feel like Bilbo was totally shafted to the sideline

Kage Uzumaki

Aren't the extended on Amazon

Luka Poser

I do feel this trilogy has more noticeable plot armor because it is at once adapting a children's book with minimal fighting, while also recreating the spectacle of the LOTR action scenes.

Eshwar Tangirala

You guys should check out the Warrior on HBO, freaking amazing!

Anonymous

Fun fact, the song at the end is "I See Fire" By Ed Sheeran :)

Victor Haglund

My thing with the hobbit is that it comes off as way to cartoony for me, like the physics are just so unbelievable. They fall and bounce like they are made out of rubber and the cgi is just too much and takes you out of the experience.

Anonymous

"I am Death"... says the dragon after being unable to kill a single dwarf. I couldnt take him serious. This movie is a 6/10 compared to the 8/10 for the first movie. This movie Was just too long and i am kinda glad they left it at the theatrical cut. Also, the colour scheme of this movie is just too off at many times. Too pale, like civil war, not visual pleasing at all, looks almost like raw footage. Orks with CGI look worse and more fake than in the original Trilogy. Legolas is a lot more badass in this movie than in Lord of the rings. Worse thing was propably forced romance between elb and dwarf, didnt care a single second. They enjoy these movies again, a lot more than people would have fought.

Anonymous

Glad you guys enjoyed the film! The Hobbit movies aren't the best, nowhere close to the trilogy of LOTR. But they are still enjoyable films. People like to hate on them because the orcs are mainly CGI and they are too long (which all 6 movies are especially the extended editions lol). Though they are not the best at least we were given more middle earth, more backstory, they don't have to be at the level of LOTR to be good films to watch. I have to admit when they were first being released in theaters, I refused to go see them and hadn't seen them years after. I thought the same, too much use of CGI, the story doesn't seem interesting. But after finally given them a watch and multiple watches after. They eventually grew on me and not as bad as I thought they were going to be. They're not going to be for everyone, but they deserve a fair chance. Also a lot of people would no doubt take the Hobbit films over the Rings of Power anyday lol. Talk about a bad LOTR adaptation, there you go 😄

Kate

Yeah, I'm surprised that Spartan keeps saying it looks better than LotR. In some respects I see the improvements to CGI, but CGI (especially of the early 2010s) never looks as good to me as the practical effects.

Kate

Well, I didn't think it would happen, but rewatching The Hobbit through your eyes has allowed me to enjoy these movies! One issue is that I only ever saw them in theatres before this--does anyone else remember the 48 frames per second debacle? I still think they go wrong in a lot of ways, but there's some great stuff there too. I bought the extended editions from Microsoft to watch with these reactions. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think many of the extended scenes (especially for the second movie) actually add texture to the world and story. From what I've heard, the extended scenes for the third movie really flesh out the battle, so I think you two especially would enjoy them. I've also been watching the special features for The Hobbit for the first time, and it helps to know about all the work and thought that went into them. They just didn't capture lightning in a bottle the way they did with the LotR. But anyway, I think you'd get a lot out of those special features too.

Alex

for me both the extended of the 2nd and 3rd hobbit movies work. The first movie just doesn't have and extended version for me.

Andrew Ramos

It's not really just lord of the rings lore, it's the fantasy genre in general. It seems like a trope but in reality its based off of old mythology and fables that are meant to teach about greed etc.

Nate Terry

In the last movie, it was said that Dragon's are attracted to gold and like to hoard it. So....a mountain with literal mountains of gold in it would definitely attract a dragon to it.

crispy chicken

I like to hear Spartan pronounce Smaug properly 😅

Anonymous

Even Rings of Power looked better. I dont know optical this movie is just off. The first movie didnt have that issue.

Anonymous

Yes thats very true, I'm sure I'd seen the trope of a dragon sitting on a pile of gold in cartoons or something...

Jeff Apperson

Did I miss the first one "an unexpected journey" isn't this the second in the series?

Ruhutta

They did do the first one. Check a bit earlier on the channel :)

gak9319

Dale is where the men of the lake used to live, not the dwarfs😄

Ruhutta

"How does he know that" in reference to Smaug saying Barrel-Rider... because Bilbo just told him xD

Jamiefishing7

It's a staple well accepted fantasy idea/fact that Dragons covet gold, basically think of it like a cat to catnip or a crow to shiny things. I believe dragons can sense when they are near gold.

Ruhutta

Yeah but to watch them during the movie and not after will help with understanding a bit more... there has got to be a way to find them where they are. Maybe a VPN or something idk, but I think they are missing quite a bit as a big LOTR fan myself.

Ruhutta

I own all 6 movies on amazon, is it possible for you guys to watch it on there perhaps?

Stryder Garvey

I was watching the extended along side them and everytime a scene came up I was like oh no not this one 😂. It will fill in enough context for them in my opinion. They are mostly pretty good at picking up details unless they talk over it, which I can’t blame them for it’s a reaction channel.

Thomas Jefferson Reyes

You might find it interesting that Peter Jackson (titles titles titles) had posted a highly entertaining and visually stunning production video diary series for The Hobbit films on his youtube page.

liam fritchley

I’ve enjoyed watching with you been a blast forgot how amazing these movies were

Jasmin

I think GRRM said in an interview that Smaug would fly directly to Casterly Rock if he managed to fly to Westeros.

Chris Mullen

Haven't gotten a chance to go through your LOTR and Hobbit reactions yet, but looking forward to it! But I am super excited for Breaking Bad and Korra reactions today! Both should be great!

Sunay Hesenov

Pls watch the next one extended

Ruhutta

True true, there have been some moments in their reactions where they spoke over something and it drove me mad xD But then it was addressed in the comments and all was well haha.

Darth Sckolar

Did the exact same. The gandalf scenes alone are worth the extended. Honestly, seeing as they are such Gandalf, just a small hint of how badass Gandalf is in these scenes would probably be the best motivation for Spartan. :P

Hans Engelen

So much lost in the theatrical version that was in the extended version. Stuff that shows the link to the LotR series. Also there is a game for this (many in fact) but I can recommend the MMO (LotRO), I play it now and again and it is actually quite nice. You meet some of the main characters now and again. It is not a game however where you play as part of the hobbit or the fellowship. Rather you play in the same timeslot as the LotR story and are part of Middle Earth as the events or that story are unfolding often following behind the main characters or helping their mission from the sidelines as it were. It's not the best description but it's hard to explain. What I can say is that it is massive and you get to see all the sights in the books and more. The Shire, Bree, Mines of Moria, Weathertop, Rivendell ... all of it and more.
