Can't wait to see your reaction to the season finale. Unless the things I'm thinking of already happened. Oh yea this one is amazing too.

Lone dissenting voice on this episode, which is a lot of people's favorite: it doesn't crack my top 30 (probably more even). Even just in this season so far, I find 1 & 2 at least and probably some of the others to just be far more compelling. I've just always (book and show) struggled to find Mance Raider and his wildlings to be an interesting or compelling threat at this stage of the story and before. And except for that one lengthy single shot around Castle Black, I find the direction oddly static and generally uninspired. I've rarely felt the sense of chaos and dread that a near-massacre with horrible odds like these should have generated. This is easily my least favorite battle in the entire show. I think in the hands of a different director (you know who), this might have been great. Finally, like Spartan, I was never cared much for this romance - or even just Ygritte. On the upside, Alliser, giants, Grenn, and that random brother with the cleaver (the cook??) were a pleasure to watch. As was Jon dancing and cutting thru the courtyard. Just one man's opinion! I'm genuinely glad others can find joy in this, and of course it was a wonderful reaction as always.

J_Fley .

That's kind of the point. They aren't really a threat. But only about one person in the Night's Watch recognizes that at any point.

To give you a little context on Alliser Thorne, he is one of the very few knights currently at the Wall. Remember that in the lore about the Wall, it used to be a place that men felt was an honorable choice to serve at, especially if you were not a first born son and weren’t due to inherit land from your family. But by this time in the story this would only still occur in the North. So the reason Alliser Thorne ended up there is because he fought on the side of the Targaryen‘s in Robert’s Rebellion. And King Robert Baratheon sent some of the knights he defeated to the Wall. So Alliser resents the fact that he is at the Wall. This is one of the primary reasons that he acts so superior to everyone. He was actually a terrible person to be training the new recruits, because of his attitude and the way he treats them. But Commander Jeor Mormont put him in the role of training the new recruits because he was a knight, and has the knowledge and skills for the role, if not the temperament. Alliser is a terrible person. But when you know his backstory, you can understand why he behaves like he does.
