Agree it was a slower episode that we really didn't need. If the next 2 episodes were movie length sure. But they are both shorter episodes and need to fit so much in. If this episode results in Winter or the Finale being cut short I will be pissed.

Valcor

Yes Ellie was gay in the DLC I don't know if they kissed but it was hinted at. Nothing about it in the original game tho just the DLC.

Valcor

The ending is good and will definitely be satisfying but like Spartan said it's just whether they rush it. The last 2 episodes being shorter and them spending so much time on this flashback has me worried.

I disagree that we didn't need it. It establishes that Ellie is lesbian/bi and it shows the devastating losses she has suffered, especially powerful since Joel told her last episode that "you don't even know what loss is" which clearly she does. She also expected to die but had to (probably) watch her best friend and love interest die while she survived (maybe some survivors guilt there). She finally expresses her feelings to Riley and Riley feels the same and we saw Ellie's smile after the positive response after the kiss she was probably on the moon at that point and then it's instantly taken away from her. I think this episode was very impactful overall and also gives Ellie nice character development and explains why she won't leave Joel and refuses to give up, it adds a lot of depth to her character that wasn't as obvious before. I think it was a little bit drawn out at times and probably could've been told in a shorter time but overall I am very happy with this episode and I don't think it takes away from the main story at all, quite the contrary.

Am I the only one who can’t see this video?

I think this episode was great, but as other people stated, I hope they stick the landing with the shorter run times. I'm more or less in the same boat as Spartan, in that I haven't played the game since PS3, and I never played Left Behind, but know the story from other media. So I do remember the overarching themes of the last two episodes, but I won't really be able to point to many specifics that absolutely HAS to be in there. (Some major things naturally, but I won't post them here for the sake of spoilsies)

I think this episode depicts the single best, most thoughtful, most elaborate date I have ever seen onscreen. And the best depiction of yearning and unspoken love I've seen in a long time. Oh initially I agreed w the consensus: slower, and so tense knowing the ending that you couldn't really enjoy it and were just waiting for the infected's appearance. But when I rewatched it, I was able to relax and appreciate the episode for what it was. It's a date, a declaration of love, a tragic love story. I suspected Ellie liked Riley when she wouldn't undress in front of her, or when she asked with wonder and hope "you planned stuff?" before they went down the escalator. Or when she "accidentally" bumped into Riley on the escalator. I knew 100% when she nervously fixed her hair in the Vitoria Secret window. And the way she gazed at Riley on the carousel when she wasn't looking? Such intense longing and yearning. My heart is broken for Riley. To plan such an extraordinarily wonderful thing for your love and have it turn so catastrophically wrong that it kills the person you did this for. You give someone a thoughtful, lovingly planned gift... and it explodes in their face. In Riley's mind, she killed Ellie by bring her there. Her "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" broke my heart. How I wish I could tell her that Ellie is gonna be fine! I loved this episode, yes, probably more than Long Long Time. I realize it's a minority opinion.

As someone who didnt play the game or know anything about the upcoming episode i thought Ellie did leave Joel for a second and this was a bit into the future (although i didnt think Joel was dead) but when they mentioned the Mall i realized it was a flashback lol

Ehhh I think they will probably feel rushed to anyone who has played the games because gameplay takes up most of the time. This doesn't really work in a TV format though, cause you can't spend 30 minutes having Eliie and Joel sneak around killing baddies while bantering with each other. In terms of actual plot points, I don't think there is too much to cover. Also, I think people are underestimating how much can be packed into a single episode. Bill+Frank and Henry+Sam only had an episode each, but IMO they felt way more fleshed out than in the game, even though they went through the plot pretty quick.

The scene with the kiss is almost exactly the same in the DLC, including the kiss.

SuddenImpulse

I think it was important to show this, for her character and the story. Leaving it out would be a huge mistake. That said, just like episode 3 and to a lesser extent episode 4. I do not think it required an entire episode, and I think other elements of the show and story are being sacrificed by imbalanced pacing and content coverage considering there is only 9 episodes. Some things are dragged out more than necessary, other things are cut short or reduced or even nixxed entirely that really should have been in the show. I definitely think the Left Behind dlc could have been covered as far as the details, story, emotional impact sufficiently in 15-30 minutes with smart editing and fully utilizing the fact this is a flashback, an entire episode was not needed, and they could have used the rest of the time to cover other things that are sorely missing.

Valcor

Yeah I would be fine with showing the backstory if we either had 10 episodes, or it didn't take up an entire episode. I mean even Pudgey said she felt like she understood the backstory without needing this full episode. So maybe little flashbacks was all that was needed?

Valcor

Well Bill and Frank had one of the longest episodes of the series. The finale is 43 minutes that worries me and even the penultimate episode is only like 53 or 56 can't remember.

Valcor

Well I never said I didn't like the episode. I'm just worried that spending an entire episode on this when the next 2 episodes are shorter is going to make the ending feel rushed. Even Pudgey said that she felt like she understood the backstory without needing an entire episode. Maybe they could have done little flashbacks throughout the series instead of an entire episode? Idk but like I said my only issue is if this is going to effect the ending because the finale is only 43 minutes long. Also just want to say I wouldn't be complaining if we had 10 episode or the remaining episodes were longer.

Justice for the girl Ellie gave 15 stitches

SnorlaX

it was implied but i don't think they ever said Riley was bit. Ellie elluded to it wasn't the first time she had to kill someone with Joel.

I liked the part after Joel was hurt in the game better than in the show because it was much more unclear if Joel was alive at this point. Also, since they‘ve just come from a fully stocked town (which they haven‘t been to at this point in the game, they met Joel at the dam they just passed in the show), it‘s pretty glaring why they wouldn‘t have taken a first aid kit while they were stocking up. These nitpicks happen in shows all the time and I usually don‘t mind, but it‘s rare that a nitpick that wasn‘t in the source material is added in an adaption.

I’m with you on it tbh and I also find that people have a certain set of expectations for things nowadays and often spend their time watching things in anticipation for this thing or that and then jumping to point out what was wrong with it. Opinions are valid of course and taste varies from person to person, but I do wish people could just sit back and enjoy storytelling for what it is more often. I thought this was a beautiful episode and endeared me to Ellie a lot. I am someone who not only enjoys a slow burn story, but prefers them and am more interested in characters than plot which I know is not a popular preference. To me, it seems like TLOU is more interested in characters than plot as well and I know for people who played the game, its probably frustrating. As someone who reads a lot, I usually just take adaptations for what they are which is a version of a story I already know which takes the pressure off and allows me to just escape in it and more often than not appreciate it for what it is and not what I want it to be. And yes, I think Long, Long Time was beautiful but I think I liked this episode more as well.

Jacob Cantu

Riley was 100% bit in the DLC. She says the same like "we can be all poetic and just lose our minds together."

Jacob Cantu

To be fair, Joel was running away, and Ellie was going with Tommy who probably did have a ton of supplies. Also considering they each only have a normal sized backpack, I doubt they could fit an entire first aid kit with everything to fix this sort of issue. At most they'd have bandages and alcohol which to be fair are game staples but those won't do much in this situation.

Jonny Rey

Spartan keeps basically flat out telling Pudgey to expect Joel to be dead bc he thinks that’s the point we’re at in the series. But we aren’t even there yet, he just doesn’t remember the games. If he remembered he would know he’s actually spoiling something that happens a completely different way much later on in the story. THIS IS NOT THE MOMENT HE THINKS IT IS lol I wish the mods would refresh his memory so he stops affecting her expectations 😭

spartanandpudgey

No I am throwing Pudgey off, that is all. She expects him to live, and I made her doubt that. i am not hinting at anything else
