A few clarifications for you: 1. The police force that we the audience are watching are the state police, operating in the state of Massachusetts and the city of Boston. 2. The FBI are a federal police organisation. The FBI are higher up than the Massachusetts state police. 3. Costello (the head criminal) was giving information to the FBI. This is why the Massachusetts state police could never bust him. They kept trying to make it a federal case, but it kept getting denied, because Costello was a protected FBI informant. 4. When Sullivan (Matt Damon) discovers that Costello was an FBI informant, he went to kill Costello so he couldn’t be given up to the FBI. 5. It would appear that Costello was infertile. He kept having sex but never had any sons, hence he had to groom children into the fold. 6. Sullivan had erectile disfunction and it was most likely Billy’s (DiCaprio’s) baby. Sullivan may have figured this out when he was at Billy’s funeral, as he was wondering why his ex girlfriend would be at a random undercover cop’s funeral, unless there was something romantic going on between them. 7. The information that Billy gave to the shrink was most likely information that he was an undercover cop and most likely his password to his file and possibly more tapes and evidence of Sullivan’s involvement. 8. Billy was seeing a shrink as part of his court ordered sentence that he was given when he went to jail. It was part of the undercover set up to convince the world he wasn’t a cop.

The first time I watched The Departed, I was about half way through the movie before I realised that Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio were both in this film and paying different characters. I was very confused and had to go back to the start of the movie. But never did I think Anthony Hopkins was in it and this could be a continuation of Hannibal Lector’s story.

Martin Scorsese DOES NOT LIKE RATS. In all of his films the only good rat is a dead one.

It’s likely the kid was Billy’s cuz remember Matt Damon character couldn’t get it up lol and she sent the information Billy gave her to mark character which is how he knew everything.

For further clarification. Municipal Police, like those in a city, generally have jurisdiction over their city/town and more specifically their precinct's patrol area. State Police have jurisdiction over the entire state, especially in the areas in-between cities and towns. FBI has jurisdiction over the expanse of All States in the USA, but no official capital outside of it ofc

And so...we get a bit more insight (ish) into what Russ went through before the events of True Detective

Only knowing Martin Scorsese for shutter island kinda hurts my soul but still a great reaction! You guys gotta watch more of his movies

Spartans reaction to the end made me burst out laughing 😂

Demented Avenger

welcome to my neck of the woods. We too don't pronounce our Rs.

Spartan struggles soon much with sudden deaths. I've seen it many times and it's often hilarious. Always a lengthy period of denial and it takes him forever to accept/digest them. It's interesting to observe.

I know Spartan doesn’t find this type of ending satisfying, but it’s very realistic and it’s kind of the main point of this movie regarding the sheer futility of violence: “Live by the sword, die by the sword.” Everyone was playing such a complicated life-or-death game of chess and look how it turned out… it *was* all for nothing, that’s the point. And Costello’s line at the beginning of how it doesn’t matter if you’re a cop or a criminal when you’re staring down the barrel of a gun proves true. Other important themes in this story are identity and legacy… The two main characters are flip sides of the same coin: a bad guy pretending to be good and vice versa. (You talked a bit about the mindf*** of constantly pretending like that.) The legacy part is the older men being father figures (both good and bad) to the younger men with various consequences. Also Madolyn being pregnant with Costigan’s baby at the end is a more hopeful legacy, I think. There was lots of injustice, there was some justice… it’s kind of a wash in the end.
