My grandfather was a bit like Tommy after ww2. When planes would fly over his house he would snap back to ww2. When things were quiet he would drink himself to death and look for the danger. Your psychy adapts to ever present danger and when the dangers gone the psychy stays and it can feel more comfortable to find a threat to fit your psychy than it is to feel crazy and broken in a nice quiet family setting. Were watching what happens when a very intelligent and resourceful mind looks for the enemies it's adapted to fighting. His search for an enemy is his search for peace and his family only know how to support him by fighting with him. The success as a gangster is just a meaningless byproduct. Danny wizbang stabing the random gangster is a representation of tommy but there's no one to stop him. It reminds me of when Ather says who can stop us now! And then quietly says no one. When is it enough Tommy? When were safe. When will we be safe? When hes killed the enemy in his head.
