Making this change isn't a huge deal right now but I wanted to know your guy's thought on the topic. Due to my lack of understanding about noble titles at the time, you'll remember I called Duke Gloomcrest 'the local lord' and so on, whereas I gave the villain the Duke of Dewhurst because it sounded cool and alliterative.

Do you guys think its confusing having an ally and a villain that are both often referred to as 'the Duke'? Because I feel it restricts the wording I can use sometimes. DoD could be renamed in the future to streamline the story.

Just checking for thoughts.

It depends on how much influence you think the duke of gloomcrest has. Dukes are the highest level of noble outside of nobility and in a lot of countries the title was reserved for branches of the royal family that didn't inherit the throne. Is he one of the most powerful nobles in the kingdom or is he just the "local noble." If he is just in charge of a smaller area, earl or count may be a more fitting peerage. It would also put emphasis on the Duke of Dewhurst thinking himself above the local lord.

I wasn't clear in my post, I meant to say that I later learned that duke was the highest besides king. That was what he was intended as. Karnalle has 7 provinces, six of which have Dukes while one has the King himself. Below them are Counts and then Barons.

Karnalle is meant to be very simple. I don't want to have tons and tons of roles, so when setting up the worldbuilding I stuck to something easy to remember.

I think the DoD is fine, maybe make duke gloomcrest a marquis instead? Ah someone already suggested that.

That was not the question, if something changes its the DoD not Duke. Him being Duke is important to the lore and set in stone.
