2023-02-19 19:23:27 Adding to the suggestion about Black History month entries above (which I think is a great idea & would mix well with the Harry Potter movies to balance off), I agree with Amistad (I actually haven't seen that 1 yet myself & been meaning to). My suggestions based your tastes & interests from what I've gathered (through the music & movies) 1. Crooklyn: (did the whole outline in the previous post, 1993 released & takes place in 1973 & is semi-autobiographical about that summer in Brooklyn for his family told from his sister's perspective, 1 of his most lighthearted movies, but still there's heaviness, but it's not about the heaviness. 2. Cooley High: a MOTOWN film released in 1975 but it takes place in 1964, and the soundtrack is all Motown 1964, great coming of age story & great music 3. Lady Sings The Blues: Motown's 1st movie, & Diana Ross's 1st movie...that got her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress (she & Cisely Tyson were nominated that year & became the 2nd & 3rd black women to ever be nominated, in that category & the 2nd & 3rd to be nominated since Dorthy Dandrige about 16 years previously, and would remain never won by a black woman until Halle Berry in 2002). It's a VERY loose biography of Billie Holiday, I mean so much of it is not factual & a lot of it that is is "cleaned up", BUT it's still a damn good movie & full of REALLY good performances, Diana Ross proved herself to be more than a singer & entertainer in that role, she proved herself to be an actress too. What's interesting too Diana was 27-28 when filming it but she plays her from 12-44 & does a very convincing job of it in my opinion. Full of great music too, and that soundtrack is 1 of Diana's best selling albums & for me (a Diana expert) 1 of her best start to finish albums, she doesn't sound like Billie, but she does her songs fantastically (so she also proved herself to be more than a pop or soul singer too, she handled the blues like a natural) 4. Harlem Nights, THIS IS COMEDIC GOLD!!! EDDIE MURPHY, RICHARD PRYOR, RED FOXX (Fred Sandford you MIGHT know, but I don't know if yall do,), it's a comedic Gangster film that was released in 1989 (written & directed by Eddie too, the only movie to date he's directed) and it takes place largely in 1930. 5. THE WIZ, JAY......Im still trying to wrap my head around the dis-interest of The Wizard of Oz...this movie is game changer in so many ways & it's got a lot of action & adventure, GRANTED it might take a minute to warm you up to the 1938 version, but The Wiz (1978) is another Motown movie with Diana Ross as Dorthy (controversial casting because Dorthy was supposed to be 12, but the film made her 24.....and Diana was 33-34 when filming, she lobby'd really hard for this part & in many regards her lobbying & the films financial failure kind of killed her acting carreer/interest, to date it's her last big screen performance), MICHAEL JACKSON (in his only film role) as the Scarecrow, you have Richard Pryor as the Wiz, & the legendary Lena Horne as Glenda, but the biggest highlight is the music, again Jay.....I know you a lil rough on musicals, but the music in this (all produced by QUINCY JONES, THIS MOVIE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TEAMING UP OF MICHAEL JACKSON & QUINCY JONES!!! OFF THE WALL & THRILLER WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT THIS MOVIE YALL!!!!). It's worth checking out! 6. The Last Dragon.......yet another Berry Gordy/Motown film, 1985! Great music, KUNG FOO! SHO NUFF! BRUCE LEROY, it's 1 of those once you've seen it you'll NEVER forget it!
