Fantastic reaction! And your putting it together at the end is exactly what everyone was doing when the movie first played in theaters. There might have been a few folks who said they suspected all along that he had died. But overwhelmingly most of us got the surprise twist at the end. Jay I'm like you and don't really like/enjoy scary movies. But my family LOVES; them the more scary the better. I think some of the "slasher" type blood and gore movies just don't entertain me because there isn't really a plot or characters I feel invested to follow. I know everyone praises the Halloween franchise, but I just never liked it. That said, The Shining(1980) has a similar paranormal theme. I saw Poltergiest mentioned above. But you know what I haven't seen listed above? It was pretty well done. The Amityville Horror (1979).

Forgot to say that Amityville is actually based on a true story event, much like The Exorcist (1973). I get a little extra "freak out" when I know that somewhere something like the story happened in real life. That's why I've only seen The Silence of the Lamb once.
